A young George Washington oversaw his first real military engagement in the rolling farmland of Fayette County, and it did not go the way he probably hoped. ⚔️

In July 1754, Washington's hastily built circular stockade, later named Fort Necessity, was overwhelmed by French and allied Native American forces after a day of fighting in the rain. He was forced to surrender the fort, the only formal surrender of his entire military career, and the skirmish that preceded it is often cited as the opening spark of the French and Indian War, a conflict that eventually widened into a global war between Britain and France.

The reconstructed fort still stands today as a National Battlefield, a modest wooden structure sitting in a quiet meadow that most people driving through southwestern Pennsylvania have no idea played a part in starting a war that reshaped colonial North America.

Kentuck K**b’s story includes a familiar western Pennsylvania name: Hagan Ice Cream. I.N. and Bernardine Hagan commissioned the Frank Lloyd Wright home after visits to their friends’ home at Fallingwater inspired them.
