Nothing is as important as safe drinking water when camping. There are many ways to purify water for safe drinking from boiling to adding bleach and or filtering. If your campground water has a chlorine taste fill a pitcher with it. Stir the water around then let it sit without a lid so the chemicals can evaporate out leaving you with good tasting clean water. The lenght of time this takes is dependent on temperature. The warmer it is, the quicker the evaporation takes place. If your water source is more primitive first filter then bring the water to a rolling boil for at least one minute. Allow to cool and it is now safe to drink. Never assume an unknown water source is safe. Always take action to assure you are drinking safe water.

ALL ABOUT TENTS
If you are wanting to get into tent camping this is for you. Things to consider when choosing the right tent.
The first consideration needs to be weather. Your tent needs to work with the weather you are camping in. If it's a windy place you need a shorter low profile tent. These are designed to redirect the wind and let it pass. A taller tent is a direct wind block and does not work well in high winds.
If hot summer time you need to shade over your tent with a tarp or an EZ up. This blocks the solar radiation. Without this your tent is like an oven and collects and stores heat. In the cold winter you need to put blankets over the top of your tent then tarp over this. The tarp and blankets insulate and prevent heat loss.
Portability is another important factor. If car camping a heavy tent is fine. If a hike in a lighter tent is necessary.
Adapt to the conditions and get out and enjoy the outdoors.

Cold Weather Tent Camping

When the season changes to winter it seems most camping ends. In the South this is not necessary. While this is for tent camping it also can be applied to RV Camping alike. Extend your camping season with these suggestions.

1: Camp set up: Make sure you orient your tent so the door does not face into the cold winds. Keep your windows and doors closed to retain heat. In extremely cold temperatures insulate your tent. Once your tent is set up cover the top with a couple of blankets then tarp over them. This will help keep the rising heat inside your tent.

2: Picking the right site: It is advisable when camping in the winter to choose an electric site. This allows you to use an electric space heater and electric heating pads or electric blankets. Never go to sleep and leave a heater on. Use it to keep the tent warm til bedtime then cut it off or turn it way down. Get up a little early and start the heater back.

3: Your sleep setup: You can use sleeping bags designed to keep you warm in extreme cold weather or use electric blankets and pads. Wear a tobogan or sleeping hat at night.

4: Campfires: Set up your camp based on the winds and the fire location. Set your tent up so the fire does not blow sparks and smoke in it. Set a lean to tarp between the tent and the fire open towards the fire where you can sit in chairs while the backing reflects the heat back on you. Set the bottom side of the tarp a couple inches above the ground to allow ventilation to keep your shelter from becoming filled with smoke. Cook all of your meals as possible on the fire. Put your fire out when you retire for the evening and relight it in the morning. A change in wind can easily happen and set your camp on fire while you sleep.

5: Your clothing: Dressing in layers is important when winter camping because of the fluctuation in temperatures you face. Always bring extra clothing so you can be sure you can change into something dry when necessary.

Don't let wintertime ruin you outdoor fun. Prepare and plan and you will find this season is no different then the other three. Please comment and add other things you do to stay warm and enjoy the winter outdoors.
