It is an honor to present the 2024 Holiday tree at The Hotel Bentley. As we look at this tree, adorned with lights and decorations, we are reminded not only of the joy and warmth of the holiday season but also of the love and care that exists within our community. This tree, though a symbol of celebration, also serves as a symbol of hope, resilience, and gratitude. And today, it stands as a tribute to the brave men and women who dedicate their lives to keeping us safe—our first responders. Every day, in the face of adversity, whether it's responding to emergencies, saving lives, or offering comfort during the most difficult of times, our first responders give more than we could ever ask of them. They put their lives on the line, often at great personal risk, to ensure that we can go about our daily lives with a sense of security and peace. This tree is a gift to them, a symbol of our deep appreciation for their unwavering commitment. It stands not only as a reminder of the sacrifices they make but also of the courage they embody and the selflessness they demonstrate, day in and day out. From the firefighters who rush into danger to the paramedics who offer lifesaving care, to the police officers who protect and serve with honor, each one of them is a hero in our eyes. Let us remember that the holiday season is not just about decorations or gifts, but about the spirit of giving and service. This tree is our way of saying thank you to those who give so much of themselves for the safety and well-being of others. To all the first responders—thank you. Your dedication does not go unnoticed, and your service is appreciated more than words can express. You are the true lights that shine in our community, and we are incredibly grateful for each and every one of you. May this tree remind us all of the power of kindness, the strength of community, and the importance of giving back. As we move forward into the new year, may we continue to support and honor those who make our world a safer place.
Merry Christmas, and thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for all that you do.

For the fourth year we have installed our American made Douglas fir tree in the grand lobby which exudes the holiday spirit. The tree stands over 22 feet tall, is wrapped with sparkling white lights and has an accumulation of ornaments both old and new.
This year The Hotel Bentley Holiday tree is dedicated to the outstanding educators of Rapides Parish. Our teachers have shown resilience through their navigating changing curriculums, technological advances in the classroom and student behavior. We as a community rely on our teachers to nurture, encourage and produce tomorrow’s leaders. We hope that the teachers of our community know that our tree shines bright representing their passion for education and our gratitude for their work. We at the Hotel Bentley are extremely proud and grateful for all that our educators do! You are building the foundation for tomorrow. This year you will notice additional ornaments. These ornaments have been crafted by several schools in our parish. Each is proudly displayed on our tree. We invite our community to visit and take photos with your family and loved ones and make this a holiday tradition. On behalf of The Hotel Bentley ownership and hospitality team we Thank You and Happy Holidays.

SECOND UPDATE. The rooftop fire never breached the property. Two windows were shattered due to heat, which allowed smoke into the second level. The interior of Hotel Bentley has very little smoke damage and is isolated to a mezzanine level office. Guest rooms, event spaces and the Grand Lobby remain untouched with the exception of the registration desk. The Hotel Bentley systems performed in the manner intended. Evacuation was timely, fire suppression systems performed accordingly. ServePro is on the scene to extract water. Occupancy has been reissued and the property is back online with fire protection in place. Thank you to Alexandria Fire Department for your quick response and performance.

What you are seeing is a fact. There was a fire today. It was on a lower level exterior roof elevation that was being replaced. All guests and HB team were evacuated. AFD did an exceptional job at responding and extinguishing the fire. One roof worker received burns and is being sent to the burn center. There is damage to the property, mostly exterior and water resulting from the fire suppressions systems. The building responded appropriately by activating all emergency systems and alerts. The Hotel Bentley has been through a lot over the years and this will be another notch to add to the rich history of the Hotel Bentley. THANK YOU to everyone in our community for reaching out to offer assistance!

Hotel Bentley

The Hotel Bentley was constructed in 1907 by Joseph Bentley, a native of Pennsylvania who became wealthy in the lumber industry in Central Louisiana. Bentley was an eccentric fellow, and legend has it that the only reason he built the hotel is because he was turned down for a room in the former Ice House Hotel. Bentley was particularly impressed by the Capitol Hotel in Little Rock Arkansas, and asked architect George R. Mann to design him a hotel in Alexandria, opened to the public on August 10, 1908. In 1933 Bentley built a massive eight-story wing fronting Third Street to his hotel, adding more than 80 rooms, which was constructed by a local firm, Tudor-Ratcliffe. Bentley ensured the hotel could also serve as his personal residence. He carved out a large apartment on one of the top floors and installed a personal elevator; both the apartment and the private elevator remain today. During World War II, the United States military trained over a half of a million img024troops in the Alexandria area. The commanders of these troops Dwight Eisenhower and George S. Patton resided for long periods of time at the Hotel Bentley, sometimes joined by Omar Bradley and Henry Kissinger planning the historic Louisiana Maneuvers. Throughout the 1950s, the hotel continued to flourish, but by the late 1960s the hotel closed for business for nearly a decade. On November 15, 1979, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places and then in early 1980’s Buddy Tudor, a local developer, purchased and renovated the shuttered hotel, reopening it after millions of dollars in repairs to national acclaim in 1985. Mr. Tudor remained as owner for nearly 15 years and in the late 1990’s he sold to a group out of New Orleans, and less than a year later, they sold the hotel to Bob Dean who eventually closed it’s doors in 2004. On August 1, 2012, plans were announced for local developer Michael Jenkins to renovate and reopen Hotel Bentley, with luxury condos, a 96-room hotel, meeting rooms, and restaurant. On October 11, 2012, the sale from Dean to Hotel Bentley of Alexandria LLC, headed by local entrepreneur and preservationist Michael Jenkins was completed. The hotel has undergone a multi-million dollar restoration which included converting the seven-story tower portion of the property into condominiums. The original portion of the property will remain a hotel with 92-94 rooms.
