Managed by Blue Door Properties in Alma, Wisconsin. Built in the same era as the Eiffel Tower, the building known today as Alma’s Big River Theatre stands tall as a community icon with a rich local history. In 2019 the 2nd and 3rd floors were opened as lodging space and we are proud to present to you the Inn At Big River Theatre. Offering fantastic views of the Mississippi River, these 2nd & 3rd floor walk ups bring an unprecedented opportunity to experience life in Alma, Wisconsin in the late 19th century.
After a fire destroyed the original 1889 structure, Alma merchant Lutzi Tscharner bought the vacant land and hired a crew to construct a new, more fireproof brick building in 1895. Known as the Tscharner Building, the red brick building was three stories high. The first floor boasted 12-foot-tall ceilings, large cellars below, and a roomy storeroom — ideal for its use as a mercantile.
SECOND FLOOR ROOMS of the Inn offer a choice of the River View Apartment ( large 2-3 bedroom unit), and the Garden Suite (bedroom, bath & separate sitting area) opening in 2020.
The THIRD FLOOR of the Inn is the Eagle’s Nest Loft and encompasses the entire 3rd floor. The expansive view from this 3rd floor perch is only surpassed by the beauty of this 1,875 square foot loft. This secret gem is the best lodging space in the entire community of Alma, Wisconsin and definitely worth the walk up to the 3rd floor.
In 1904, Mason and merchant Peter Ibach likely could not resist the “for sale” sign that appeared on the building. He signed the deed, and the Tscharner Building was quickly reborn as the Ibach Building. Those sturdy bricks continued to house a mercantile, but a remodel transformed the third floor into the headquarters of the local Masonic Lodge. The Masons rented the place for the tidy sum of $75 per month until 1914, when Ibach, a savvy financier and president of the German American Bank, sold the building — to his own bank! The bank was located next door and the Ibach House is located on the hillside directly behind the Big River Theatre building.
In 2017 Scott and Irene Wolf, who fell hopelessly in love with the building and its history, purchased the Big River Theatre building. They have a vision for its future, and began turning that vision into reality, opening the doors to live theater, music, independent films and, most importantly, community camaraderie. Now in less than two years they are opening the Inn At Big River Theatre. Just as Parisians love the Eiffel Tower, Alma residents love their iconic performing arts theater. Scott and Irene continue to honor and boost this longstanding affection by welcoming guests to enjoy art and culture right here on the big river. With the addition of the Inn you can now stay in the building, enjoy the live music events, watch sunsets over the Mississippi River and stroll the historic Main Street of Alma, Wisconsin.
