One sure sign of fall here at the WSRHQ (WS Ranch Headquarters) is the maturing of the Osage Oranges or Horse Apples from the Osage Orange trees. The scientific name is Maclura Pomifera but is commonly known as Bois d' are (pronounced - bow dark) or Hedge Apple. It is a member of the Moracee family to which figs, mulberries, breadfruit, and jackfruit also belong, and is native to the south central US.
It was used as a hedge in the early days of the WS Ranch here in Alma, NM and remnants of these trees continue to thrive today. The short sharp thorns about 1/2" long was an excellent incentive to keep cattle where they belong before the invention of bob wire in 1884 by Joseph Gideon.

I have read that the fruit was being developed for its natural insecticide qualities. My mother, Toni McKeen would place them around our house in the closets to prevent insects. Just a little history of the WSRHQ!

Anyone out there want to see some early morning elk? Come pay us a visit. There were 4 good size bulls this morning and about 15 cows grazing in our fields.

If you've never visited Cooney's Tomb it is a beautiful time of year to do so.

On April 29, 1880, Sergeant Cooney, Jack Chick, and a man whose last name was Buhlman were on horseback riding to Alma to warn the settlers of an Indian attack at the Cooney mine and the town of Cooney. Victorio had led a group of Chiricahua Apache tribal members in the massacre. Shortly thereafter, Sergeant Cooney's brother Michael and miners from nearby Pinos Altos drilled, blasted and chipped a sepulcher for his remains in a large boulder. The Sergeant has remained interred there since.
