What if your brain has a hidden waste-removal system?

Scientists in South Korea may have uncovered an important piece of a 250-year-old mystery.

New research has identified tiny openings around the brain that appear to help drain cerebrospinal fluid toward the body’s lymphatic system.

Why does this matter? Researchers are exploring how the brain clears waste and whether disruptions in this process may play a role in conditions like Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.

It’s not a treatment or cure, but it could be an important step toward better understanding the aging brain.

You’re not imagining it.

For some people living with dementia, the brain’s internal body clock can become disrupted. As evening approaches, they may have more difficulty understanding whether it’s time to sleep, wake up, eat, or get ready for the day.

This can lead to what caregivers often call sundowning: increased confusion, anxiety, agitation, or wakefulness later in the day.

Sometimes, understanding why the behavior is happening can help us respond with more patience, reassurance, and compassion.

🌙 Sunday Night Reminder

Take a deep breath.
You don’t have to have everything figured out tonight.

Let go of what didn’t go as planned.
Release the worries you can’t solve right now.
Give yourself permission to rest.

Tomorrow is a new beginning.
A fresh page.
Another chance to try again.

For tonight, just be still.
Your heart deserves a little peace.

Goodnight. May your mind be quiet, your heart be light, and your sleep be peaceful. ✨

LOOK BEYOND THE BEHAVIOR

In dementia care, a resident may stop participating in a task they once handled easily.

It can be tempting to see this as stubbornness or refusal.

But there may be something else happening beneath the surface.

What looks like refusal may be the resident’s way of telling us, “Something isn’t right.”

Sometimes “I can’t” means:
“I need you to slow down.”
“I need some help.”
“I need to feel safe.”

With more than 7 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s dementia, researchers continue to explore everyday factors that may support cognitive health.

A recent Emory University study found that higher vitamin D supplement intake was associated with better cognitive function among adults at elevated risk of dementia.

Vitamin D also plays an important role in muscle and nerve function and may influence sleep, an important consideration since sleep disturbances are common among people living with Alzheimer’s.

A doll. A blanket. A purse. A stuffed animal. Even a small everyday item they always carry.

When that object is suddenly moved or taken away, they may become anxious, upset, or agitated, especially if they cannot explain why.
