There is a town on the Ohio River named after a bridge company, and underneath it sits a village built by people who were waiting for the end of the world 🏛️

Ambridge in Beaver County got its name the direct way. The American Bridge Company put an enormous plant there in the early 1900s, and steel out of Ambridge went into bridges and buildings all over the country. At its height the town was packed with immigrant families from a dozen countries, and the mill whistle ran everything, including what time you ate.

But the land was already spoken for. In 1824 a German religious community called the Harmonists built their third and final settlement right there and named it Economy. They held property in common, practiced celibacy, and believed the second coming was close enough that there was no real point planning for grandchildren. They were also extraordinarily good at business, running mills, vineyards and silk production, and later putting money into railroads and oil.

They eventually died out, exactly as their own beliefs guaranteed they would. Their buildings did not. Old Economy Village is still standing in the middle of Ambridge, the gardens and workshops and the great house, a few blocks from where the bridge plant used to run.
