🐍 It's Almost Time... Snake Road Closes Next Week! 🌿

One of Southern Illinois' most anticipated natural events is about to begin!

Starting September 1, Snake Road (LaRue Road) in the Shawnee National Forest will close to vehicle traffic for the annual fall snake migration. Through October 30, visitors can walk the closed roadway and witness one of the most remarkable wildlife migrations in North America.

Each fall, thousands of snakes, salamanders, frogs, turtles, and other wildlife travel between the limestone bluffs and LaRue Swamp as they make their way to winter hibernation sites. It's a unique opportunity to experience nature up close while helping protect these incredible animals.

If you're planning a visit:
🐍 Look, don't touch — never handle or harass wildlife.
🚶 Stay on the roadway or designated trails to protect sensitive habitats.
📸 Bring your camera and enjoy observing wildlife from a respectful distance.
🗑️ Pack out everything you bring in and leave no trace.
🌿 Leave plants, rocks, and wildlife exactly as you found them.

4:30pm - 6:30pm Historic St. Anne's Church-Southern Illinois Venue will be open for viewing. This is a come and go event, but please feel free to sit in the white chairs if needed while you’re there.

4:30pm - 5:15pm Model Bride will be getting her hair done inside the church by Hairbymyleefaith.

5:15pm - Model Couple photos start.

6:30pm - Carriage photos with Prince Carriage Company LLC . Carriage ride will start at Saint Anne’s and go downtown, traffic permitting, and end at Davie School Inn.

7:30pm - CLOSED set reception photos at Davie School Inn. Models and vendors only.

Today we are exploring the home of Superman and the mysterious world of forested wetlands, aka swamps. Southern Illinois is home to native cypress-Tupelo swamps; continuously flooded wetlands dominated by trees. A variety of animal habitat and vegetation inhabit these swamps, some of the cypress trees being more than 1000 years old. If you are accustomed to the farmlands of Illinois, you will be pleasantly surprised by this area of the state.

Stay at the Davie School Inn and visit the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, located predominately in Union County, IL between Anna and Carbondale. Each winery is unique in it's own way.
