You are cordially invited to be our guest at The Annapolis Inn, an historic landmark townhouse majestically poised on prestigious Prince George Street in the heart of the Historic District of Annapolis. John’s College, the City Dock and the State Capital and is quietly surrounded by stately historic mansions and points of interest, museums and many diverse examples of almost three hundred years of

historic architecture. No need for your car here just comfortable walking shoes! Only several blocks away from the fun of sailing activities, schools and events, walking and garden tours, civic and cultural events, and restaurants and shops, the Inn remains close yet quietly removed from the center of downtown activity. The face of Annapolis changes with each season, and with each season Annapolis offers its visitors something different to discover. In the Spring and Summer, take a walking tour of the city, the Naval Academy or the historic homes and museums. Attend the executive lectures at St. John’s College or visit the Mitchell Art Gallery on its campus. Take sailing or power boat classes, participate in ragattas, watch the Annapolis Yacht Club sailboat races every Wednesday evening. Enjoy year round sporting events at the Naval Academy. Savor the fanfare and the sights of coiffed gentry present at the annual St. John’s College croquet match against the Naval Academy. This annual event hails a spectacle and a tradition almost as old as Annapolis itself. Revered by visitors around the country sporting the look and glamour of The Great Gatsby, they mingle with Naval Midshipmen in formal dress code attire. Truly a tradition of a bygone era, it is an exquisite display of civilized showmanship and sportsmanship impossible to recreate anywhere else. The Navy Football games and The International Sailboat & Powerboat Shows announce the kick-off of Fall, transforming Annapolis into the capital of unparalled college football rivalry and maritime preeminence. Candelight tours and haunted house tours also beguile the Fall visitor and the smell of lit fireplaces, jovial taverns and restaurants, musical and theatrical performances and Halloween concerts draw many to the quaint and rustic streets of our country’s former Capitol, Annapolis.

Being a Sponsor means caring for Midshipmen, and many times it also means unexpectedly developing lifelong relationships with them. Sometimes it even extends to caring for Midshipmen families, helping them acclimate to the new world of “the military” or helping them through difficult times with their Midshipman. What about Sponsors caring for Sponsors? We’ve never experienced that to any notable degree, but we want to emphatically express our concern, our support and our commitment to the legacy of Wendi Winters and the Sponsorship legacy she left behind. If there were ever a Sponsor who deserves to be memorialized at The US Naval Academy, she is the one. A statue, a monument, a stained glass window, a plaque in the chapel, a Citation of Honor in Memorial Hall for courage, valor, bravery, patriotism and life-sacrificing protection of fellow American citizens. Without having ever taken a military oath to defend the country or the Constitution, Wendi put herself, on a moment’s notice, without any training, oath or obligation, dead center in harm’s way and took a bullet out of shear love for America and Americans. That, in itself, deserves to be memorialized and honored as part of the leadership, inspiration, values, and patriotism that The United States Naval Academy inspires in its students and in all those associated with it. Wendi, you are our silent Sponsor Hero. We dedicate this simple and small issue of our newsletter to you in your honor, and we lovingly and devotedly will take care of your sponsor son who has been been received into our hearts and home forever. Your light is a beacon for us all, and it will never go out
