Being a Sponsor means caring for Midshipmen, and many times it also means unexpectedly developing lifelong relationships with them. Sometimes it even extends to caring for Midshipmen families, helping them acclimate to the new world of “the military” or helping them through difficult times with their Midshipman. What about Sponsors caring for Sponsors? We’ve never experienced that to any notable degree, but we want to emphatically express our concern, our support and our commitment to the legacy of Wendi Winters and the Sponsorship legacy she left behind. If there were ever a Sponsor who deserves to be memorialized at The US Naval Academy, she is the one. A statue, a monument, a stained glass window, a plaque in the chapel, a Citation of Honor in Memorial Hall for courage, valor, bravery, patriotism and life-sacrificing protection of fellow American citizens. Without having ever taken a military oath to defend the country or the Constitution, Wendi put herself, on a moment’s notice, without any training, oath or obligation, dead center in harm’s way and took a bullet out of shear love for America and Americans. That, in itself, deserves to be memorialized and honored as part of the leadership, inspiration, values, and patriotism that The United States Naval Academy inspires in its students and in all those associated with it. Wendi, you are our silent Sponsor Hero. We dedicate this simple and small issue of our newsletter to you in your honor, and we lovingly and devotedly will take care of your sponsor son who has been been received into our hearts and home forever. Your light is a beacon for us all, and it will never go out
