📍 Astoria Column — the beautiful view from this historic site. Just a scenic hour's drive from Arch Cape Inn and Retreat ⛰️🌊

Perched atop Coxcomb Hill in Astoria, this 125-ft column has been watching over the Columbia River since 1926. Climb the 164 spiral steps inside and you're rewarded with panoramic views of the river, the Pacific, and miles of coastal forest.

The outside tells its own story — a hand-carved spiral mural wrapping the whole tower, depicting Astoria's history from Native American life through Lewis & Clark's arrival.

Pro tip: bring a balsa wood glider and launch it from the top. Yes, that's a real tradition here. 🛩️

Planning a full day along Highway 101? Here's one route worth trying. Start at Ecola State Park for views of Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, then follow the Three Capes Scenic Loop to Cape Meares, Oregon's shortest lighthouse at just 38 feet, with its original Paris-made lens still intact. Push on to Newport for two more: the 93-foot Yaquina Head and the smaller Yaquina Bay Lighthouse. It's a great theme for an all-day road trip!
