Driving out across southern Idaho, the land can feel wide open enough already. Then the black lava comes into view and everything changes.

This stretch of cracked rock, cinder cones, and twisted old lava tubes looks like the earth split open and froze that way. It is hard to take your eyes off the jagged fields and the strange, quiet beauty of it all.

No wonder people still make the drive out there just to walk a trail and look around. It has that same feeling I remember from childhood road trips, when the map suddenly turned into something you had to see for yourself.
