FALL COLOR IS COMING!
Here’s a handy map produced by the Appalachian State University Dept of Biology to get us thinking about the changes to come. This map differs from most other such maps because it combines the effects of both elevation and latitude on fall color, whereas most other maps simply use elevation alone. It is only an approximation.

SEPT 25th - OCT 2nd ⬇️
At the highest elevations, close to 6,000 feet there is some color, but it's often very spotty and muted. The views from these locations will be mostly green, since the areas viewed are lower elevations. Areas that turn early in this date and elevation range include Graveyard Fields and Rough Ridge.

OCT 2nd - 9th ⬇️
Peak time for areas above 5,000 feet. This would include: Clingmans Dome, Grandfather Mountain, Mount Mitchell, Waterrock K**b and Graveyard fields (the first location on the Parkway to turn) and higher elevations of The Blue Ridge Parkway (between Asheville and Cherokee) and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

OCT 9th - 16th ⬇️
Peak time for elevations from 4,000 - 5,000 feet. This would include almost all Blue Ridge Parkway locations and the majority of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as well. Included in this elevation are the Boone and Blowing Rock areas.

OCT 16th - 23rd ⬇️
Peak time for lower elevations, from 3,000 - 4,000 feet. This would include places like: Pisgah National Forest which includes Sliding Rock and Looking Glass Falls, Dill Falls, Wildcat Falls, and many other waterfalls. Other ares include Linville Gorge, Nantahala Gorge, Maggie Valley, and Cataloochee Valley.

OCT 23rd - 30th ⬇️
Peak time for elevations from 2,000 feet - 3,000 feet. This would include: The cities of Asheville, Brevard, Waynesville, Cherokee, and many others. Places of interest include Dupont State Forest and Biltmore Estate, and Cades Cove.

OCT 30th - NOV 6th ⬇️
Peak time for remaining elevations, including Gatlinburg, TN, Chimney Rock NC, Lake Lure and remaining lower elevation mountains. This includes Chimney Rock as well, a great place to see Fall color.

SLEEP UNDER THE STARS AT LAKE JULIAN PARK!
June 25th - Campout at Lake Julian Park. Get your camp on with Buncombe County Recreation Services. This annual event is part of the Great American Campout and is a great way for families, friends, and youth groups to come together and connect with nature for a fun and memorable night sleeping under the stars.

⬇️ THE DETAILS:

🏕 While Lake Julian Park does not usually allow overnight camping, for one night the park will serve as an inspiring location for this nocturnal event.

🏕 No prior camping experience is required as the event is designed as a low-frill backyard campout.

🏕 Attendees should bring their own tents and sleeping bags.

🏕 Campers can participate in a handful of planned activities including demonstrations by Southern Appalachian Wilderness Stewards and REI Outdoor & Sporting Goods, a birding excursion (Sunday morning), a traditional campfire with some singalongs, and – of course – s’mores.

🏕 Also, participants may try out some products provided by our friends over at ENO. Recreation Services will provide dinner on Saturday night and breakfast on Sunday morning for participants.

🏕 Campsites will be available at 1 p.m. on Saturday with on-site check-in at 1:30 p.m. Campers should be packed up by 1 p.m. on Sunday.

🏕 The cost is $20 per person. Advance registration required-includes a 20 ft x 20 ft campsite, dinner, breakfast, snacks, and activities.

WINTER WONDER WALK!
Dec 10th, 11th, 17th, 18th, and 19th 5:30pm - Winter Wonder Walk at the Adventure Center of Asheville. Celebrate the Wonder of Winter. Take part in an immersive story walk complete with live characters, lights, and a blustery quest. After the Trail, enjoy a warm festival tent buzzing with activities including a stocking stuffer market with local vendors, warm tasty concessions, a holiday photo booth, and activities for the family.

Tickets are $15 with $1 being donated to MANNA FoodBank through their Memories Making Meals program. Children 3 and under are FREE.

Doors and festivities open at 5:30pm each night. The Winter Wonder Walk Trail opens at 6pm, with the last entrance to the trail at 8:30pm.

This is the ultimate Asheville collaboration combining the creative powers of The Conundrum, The Haunted Trail Asheville's family friendly Haunt, and the Adventure Center of Asheville.

ROAD TRIP!
Daily, Mid Oct-Early Nov 5:30pm-6:00pm(ish) - The Shadow of the Bear naturally occurring phenomenon near Cashiers. Coming out of hibernation each Autumn, “The Shadow of the Bear” is visible for 30 minutes on sunny days between 5:30pm and 6:00pm from mid-October through early November due to the setting of the autumnal sun behind the mountain. The best viewing spot for the shadow is right off Highway 64 in a place called Rhodes Big View Overlook, atop Whiteside Mountain. It starts with a small dark shadow at the bottom of the valley, and grows until it finally evolves into the bear.

🐻 The Shadow of the Bear also occurs in late winter from mid-February through early March.
