The Sweat Lodge Teaching Weekend went very well! Smooth, good work done and good sharing. The attendees were interested, open, respectful and rolled up their sleeves. A very good Lodge build. We even got them to sing, and provided a lovely native-themed moon service!

Pics: Building the new Large Sweat Saturday morning. Dismantling the old frame, it’s service done with a final ride on Friday Night. Working the woodpile. We had ceremony in the new Lodge on Saturday afternoon.

Chalice and the Blade 2026 was a beautiful and magical time out of time. Seemingly endless rain, instead of creating dampened spirits, pulled us closer, into more intimate ceremonies and evening activities. In downtimes, we sat by a fire and told stories, and exchanged ceremonial tools and tips.

But something like that does not happen by accident, and it takes an able and willing community to step up and manifest that vision…There are about twenty dedicated souls I would like to name here, to thank them, to honor their singular contributions. But I also know these Ladies and Gentlemen. And I do not wish to be banished to the nether realms or somesuch, so I will abstain from naming names, but, whether you offered a workshop, ceremony, or panel, whether you brought an item made of “unobtainium,” or if you called a quarter, stuffed page protectors in a liturgy book, cooked, baked, cleaned, stuffed goody bags, took a picture, or created CampNet Codes, your stellar efforts were seen, were felt, and were appreciated by one and all.

Blessings of the Land Upon You And All Your Houses.

On Chalice & The Blade

I generally do not care for last-minute surprises.
But I care about this one!

The staff of Chalice and the Blade are honored to welcome Orion Foxwood as a member of our faculty.

Orion has a long, long history with Four Quarters. He goes back to the very beginnings, when he served as High Priest of the very first Stones Rising. He has been away for many years, and we are waiting eagerly to welcome him home. We are sure he will enjoy all the amenities Four Quarters now has to offer, because, like me, and just a few others, he remembers when the only amenity was that the dirt stayed (mostly) underfoot!

Orion will be sharing his vast knowledge with this intriguing offering:

The Power and Presence of the Dark Rider: Traditional Southern Crossroads and Liminal Magic with Orion Foxwood

The belief that a there is a powerful intercessory spirit or deity that dwells at physical thresholds, transition points and intersections is a common theme in the folk beliefs and magical practices traditions of Africa, Europe and in the American South. The most common being the crossroads where roads, foot paths, horizontal and vertical forces (such as the planetary poles and rotation), the living and dead (graveyards) and/or geological states (such sea, land, wind etc) intersect . These places are often described by those who know their secrets as being “claimed by all yet owned by none” - where reality, causality, liminality and possibilty are present but beyond the clutch of time, limitation and the usual rules of consensus thought. The spirit dwelling there is seen as the opener and closer of the ways (roads of life) and its names (and gender) vary depending on the local tradition or that of the petitioner/ magic worker and include Papa Leba (New Orleans Creole spelling), the Devil, the Crossed Man, the Dark One, the Trick Doctor, Jesus-on-the-Road and the Dark Rider to name a few. His power, and his capriciousness is legendary and it is both feared and revered. However, there are traditions and techniques for revering, encountering, and employing his power safely and effectively. Likewise, there are times and means to approach his crossroads where luck, love, life and death meet. In this workshop, Orion will share lore of the crossroads, its magic, its roads and its Master; and how to find and work with them. He will share music, poetry, lore and practices to introduce you to the spirit he knows as the Dark Rider.

At the thinning time when shadows move apart.

Sadness fades and frees the haunted heart.

Four roads from everywhere to somewhere meet.

At a crossroads, where spirits and conjure greets;

Four roads from everywhere to somewhere meet,

Let us walk the magic road with practical feet,

The way is open…………… (by Orion Foxwood)

Sweat Lodge Teachings Weekend 2026
Thursday-Sunday, May 28-31, 2026
https://4qf.org/attending/events/sweat-lodge-teaching-weekend

For those who wish a deeper exposure to the practice and traditions of the Sweat Lodge Ceremony, we are offering an extended weekend immersed in Sweat Lodge.

We will be cutting wood and carrying water, hauling stones, preparing and taking our meals together, and exploring aspects of Sweat Lodge Ceremony and indigenous spirituality. This weekend offers you an intimate opportunity to learn and work with the Sweat Lodge, allowing participants to gather a deeper appreciation and understanding of these sacred ways. We’ll explore how we honor the teachings shared with us, and serve the Interfaith Community of Four Quarters within these ancient traditions.

This year we plan to rebuild the larger Riverside Sweat Lodge, as it’s about reached the end of its service, so you have an opportunity to participate in this ceremonial process. Everything is done with respect and intention. It will be a rich, full, weekend with a lot to immerse yourself in. Or just come to pray, not a thing wrong with that.

This weekend will also encompass a native-themed Saturday Moon Service, which will be facilitated by the Sweat Team and Attendees as part of the Teachings. The weekend includes shared Brunches and Suppers. Registration includes your Tent Camping, Ceremonial Supplies, and our Shared Meals. There is no charge for Ceremony. A fees purely contribute to our material costs.

We, here at Chalice and the Blade, would never, ever blow smoke up your broomstick. So, let’s talk for just a moment about the elephant in the room-the weather!

It’s gonna rain. (Or so they say. /grin) But Four Quarters has lots of indoor spaces and outdoor spaces under roof, so, no worries, it’ll be fine. At least it won’t be HOT!!! (And veteran Chalice family members know exactly what I’m talking about!) It won’t be cold either, just rainy.

Now, examine the photo below. It’s not recent. In fact, it’s 27 years old! It features 2 Chalice and the Blade presenters, Pamela Alexander, and Paul Kendrick, doing Ceremony in the Stone Circle in a real downpour! (Okay, it was a hurricane!)

As Bob Marley said, “Some folks feel the rain, others just get wet.” But there is a third option that Bob forgot-be like Paul and bring an umbrella!

Sound too wet to be in a tent? We have lodging available onsite starting at $10.00 per night for Four Quarters members, $20.00 per night for guests! Just call the office at (814) 784-3080 to make a reservation!

In our tradition of deepening the bonds of Circle, all meals are included with your registration. Join the Circle, learn the Old Ways made new. Living breathing tradition. Values. Experience. Knowledge. Reverence.

There is something ancient that awakens in the drum circle.

The unison of drums echoing through the night. Voices rising together in song. Sword dances flashing in the fire glow. Bare feet moving with the rhythm of the earth beneath them. Strangers becoming community one beat at a time.

There is also something modern that comes alive.

Flow toys tracing light through the darkness.
Bubbles abound.
LED wings shimmering through the night air.

At Drum N Splash, the drum circle is the heartbeat of the gathering.

Some come to drum in unison until the rhythms feel almost trance like. Some come to dance. Some come to perform. Some simply sit quietly at the edge of the circle and let the energy move through them.

Every year the magic is different because every person brings their own spirit to the circle.
