Colors are popping at 4,000 - 5,000 feet, so take a hike to Mount Pisgah off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

You'll find picnic spots, trails, and campgrounds. To enjoy the view with a delightful meal, make time for lunch at the Pisgah Inn Restaurant.

For a real treat, plan to head to the Nantahala National Forest and Whiteside Mountain for the “Shadow of the Bear,” an elusive illusion that occurs for about 2 weeks each year. The “bear” appears in shadow form overlooking the mountains between 5:30-6:15 p.m. on sunny days until early November, and you can view it off Highway 64 at the Rhodes Big View Overlook.

Starting November 3rd in North Carolina, the “Christmas at Biltmore” celebration at the historic Biltmore Estate in Asheville gets underway as one of the most magical holiday experiences you’ll find anywhere in the US! Running through January 10th, 2027, this wonderful holiday tradition dates back to George Vanderbilt’s first Christmas at Biltmore in 1895. Inside America’s largest home, you’ll find over 100 beautifully decorated Christmas trees throughout the estate, thousands of ornaments, fresh evergreen garlands, glowing fireplaces, and room after room filled with Christmas decorations. The centerpiece is a massive 35-foot Fraser fir in the grand Banquet Hall! Visitors can tour the mansion during the day or book the special Candlelight Christmas Evenings, when flickering candles, roaring fireplaces, twinkling lights, and live Christmas music make the experience even more memorable. Outside, a towering 55-foot Christmas tree lights up the front lawn. You can also explore the gardens, see seasonal plants inside the Conservatory, enjoy Christmas lights throughout Antler Hill Village, browse shops, dine at estate restaurants, and enjoy complimentary w**e tastings at the Winery. Evening house tours require separate reservations, so booking ahead is highly recommended!

This is the week when 🍂 leaves start to change color at the highest altitudes, such as Mount Mitchell, the highest peak in the eastern United States at 6,684 feet, and Grandfather Mountain at 5,282 feet.

Mount Mitchell is usually 20-30 degrees colder than Asheville, so bring a sweater if you plan to hike to the top. 100% worth it!

The great-great-grandson of George and Edith Vanderbilt grew up with Biltmore as his backyard.

Chase Pickering explored its forests, creeks and meadows- and cared for injured wildlife with his mother. Biltmore was less a famous house for him and more the beginning of a career.

An early connection to the natural world led Pickering to a career in conservation, including work with Jane Goodall and the Disney Conservation Fund, before eventually bringing him home to Asheville.

Now Biltmore’s senior vice president of guest experience, Pickering is helping guide one of Western North Carolina’s most influential institutions into its next generation.

In our latest Q&A, he talks about growing up at Biltmore and the estate’s conservation legacy, his family’s Christmas traditions, his favorite Biltmore foods and w**es, and what he hopes George Vanderbilt would think of the estate today.
