Two years ago, Hurricane Helene changed everything.
In the aftermath, we went silent because we were in crisis mode. No internet. No power. No water. Trees crushed friends’ homes. Sirens, helicopters, chainsaws. Hundreds of reservations canceled, but our business was the last thing on our minds.
Our focus was on our neighbors and community, so many of whom had lost homes, livelihoods, and people they loved.
We were incredibly fortunate that most of our cabins were spared. For two months, three cabins became temporary homes for families who had lost theirs, and places where friends and neighbors could shower, cook, do laundry, and charge a phone. Our days shifted to delivering food and supplies to people stranded in the mountains.
Then came the long work of rebuilding our own little business.
Our cabins survived, but much of the landscape around them did not. These photos show the same trails along Shope Creek before and after Helene.
What we remember just as vividly is how many people showed up to help. Friends, family, neighbors, volunteers, and complete strangers helped us and communities across Western North Carolina. We will never forget it. ❤️
Two years later, we’re welcoming guests again. The mountains are green. The trails are returning. Appalachia is beautiful again.
Recovery isn’t finished, though. If you’ve been waiting for the right time to return to Western North Carolina, come visit. Hike our trails. Eat in our restaurants. Shop at our small businesses. Stay in our mountain towns. Your visit matters.
