"But can you even fly into Asheville?"

Yes, and more easily than people expect. 26 nonstop destinations on five airlines — Chicago, Denver, Dallas, Boston, New York, D.C., and most of Florida. No connection through Charlotte.

And AVL is small, which is the best thing about it. You walk off the plane and you're a short walk to baggage claim. No train, no shuttle, no twenty-minute hike to the exit.

They're in the middle of a $400 million expansion — the new North Concourse is already open with seven gates and a new security checkpoint. Same easy airport, more room.

Land, drive 15 miles, park free on our street. That's the whole trip.

Routes shift with the season, so check yours before you plan around it.

We fly direct to Denver ourselves to see our daughter. It's a nice thing, living somewhere people want to visit and being able to get out just as easily.

Labor Day, and we're both working and wouldn't have it any other way.

Dan pours the coffee and talks to whoever comes down first. Diane is in the kitchen before most people are up. Ten years of this and we are still love what we do.

There's a chair on the sunporch that gets more use than any room in the house.

It's where people land — back from a hike, or the Parkway, or just downtown and done walking. Coffee, a cookie, a magazine somebody else left behind. The cookie plate is out all day, every day, and yes, people notice.

September is the month for it. Windows open, no heat, no crowds yet.

Southern Living just put Asheville on their list of Southern mountain towns worth visiting this fall — right alongside twenty-four others across seven states.

Realtors say location, location, location. Same goes for a fall trip. From a front porch in Montford you can walk to dinner downtown, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is inside ten miles. That's the whole appeal of Asheville in October.

Ask David what he's looking at and you'll be standing in one spot for ten minutes.

That's not a complaint. We came back from this hike with photos of things we'd have walked straight past — a bright orange mushroom tucked beside a log, a puffball he squeezed so we could watch the spores smoke out of it.

Anybody can follow a trail. Someone who knows these woods shows you what's growing in them.

8/28. If you know, you know.

Eight things the 828 gets right: mountains you can see from the Parkway in thirty minutes. Voter's choice "Best Restaurant" one block from our front door. Fall that lasts two months. Front porches. Live music on a Tuesday. Farmers who know your name. Roads that go up. And people who came for a weekend and stayed.

For the first time since 1942, the PGA TOUR is coming back to Asheville.

The inaugural Biltmore Championship Asheville runs September 14–20, with competition Thursday through Sunday, September 17–20, at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove in Arden. Brought here by the PGA TOUR with Visit Asheville and Biltmore as co-title sponsors. The last time tour golf came through, Ben Hogan was winning the Land of the Sky Open.

If you're coming, we're in Montford with free parking out front and downtown within walking distance for dinner after a day on the course.

Dan and I will be out there Thursday. Come find us if you're going.

One week left.

Our Midweek in the Mountains rate closes August 31: 20% off your second night, 10% off any additional weeknights, for October stays Sunday through Thursday.

This was the Lagoon at Biltmore on October 23rd last year. Fall moves down the mountains slowly here, so the valley is still turning when the Parkway has already peaked. Midweek is when you get an afternoon like this to yourself.

A while back we showed you our smallest bathrooms. Fair is fair — here's the other end.

The Wible Suite bathroom has a clawfoot tub, a walk-in tiled shower, an antique vanity, and enough room to wander around in a robe deciding which one you're in the mood for. It's the largest room at Pinecrest, with a private entrance, so you can come and go on your own schedule.

Some people book it for the tub. We don't judge.

A small confession about Mondays at Pinecrest.

Every week, this bin goes out by the front door — all the kitchen scraps from those made-from-scratch breakfasts. CompostNow picks it up, drops off a clean one, and hauls the rest off to be composted instead of landfilled. Easy for us, better for the planet. And it adds up faster than you'd think: we've kept more than 15,000 pounds of waste out of the landfill and turned it into over 5,000 pounds of compost.

Here's the part we love most, though. We've shared 2,500 pounds of that compost with Bountiful Cities, whose urban gardens grow food right here in Asheville — we've even wandered a few of them on their garden tours. So those breakfast scraps come full circle: from our kitchen, to compost, to soil feeding our neighbors.

Running a historic inn means caring for an old house. We figure it means caring for the bigger place it sits in, too.
