Leaf report from yesterday, October 15! 🍁

Fall color is putting on a show at the higher elevations. The top photo was taken near Graveyard Fields on the Blue Ridge Parkway, where the ridges are lit up in red, orange, and gold.

Then we turned off onto NC 215, one of the region’s hidden gems: a winding two-lane road under a canopy of golden leaves. Along the way is Sunburst Falls, tumbling over the boulders and framed by fall color.

A new Skift Research survey of travelers found that 71% are most likely to spend on food and culinary experiences when they travel this year, and 48% on adventure and nature.

Remember those chocolate swirl brioche buns from our Great British Baking Show week? Confession: they were not a star bake. Paul Hollywood would not have offered a handshake.

But day-old brioche makes great French toast. So the buns became a made-from-scratch French toast casserole, topped with candied pecans, caramelized bananas, and fresh banana slices, and served with bacon, eggs, and an orange twist.

A gift from a friend! Marbling artist Pam Granger Gale Majik-Studios Add Majik to your Life brought Pinecrest four tickets to the 79th annual Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands, October 15–18 at Harrah's Cherokee Center–Asheville downtown. First come, first serve to guests staying with us that weekend.

The fair runs just four days, but you can see the work of Southern Highland Craft Guild artists any time you visit. The guild's downtown gallery is now in the Grove Arcade. The Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway has even more to explore, including the Allanstand Craft Shop, which has been open since 1895 and calls itself America's oldest craft shop.

We took this photo on the afternoon of September 27, 2024, the day after Hurricane Helene tore through Western North Carolina. We woke up to devastation all around us. By afternoon the sun was out, and Pinecrest was standing safe. That light gave me hope then, and it still does.

Two years later, WNC is not fully recovered. There are people still grieving the loss of their loved ones. There are still buildings behind chain link fences and bridges that haven't been rebuilt. It's okay to say that out loud. Recovery here is slow, and it's still happening.

What I believe is the same thing I felt standing in the yard that afternoon: we're going to make it through, together.

Great British Baking Show season has us channeling our inner Paul Hollywood this week. 🍫

Consider this our technical challenge: chocolate swirl brioche buns from a Cook's Illustrated recipe (their photo, bottom right), made from scratch here in the Pinecrest kitchen. The buttery brioche dough is rolled together with chocolate dough, shaped into spirals, brushed with egg wash, and baked until golden.

No handshake required, just a seat at the breakfast table. You know how to book.

Happy first day of fall from Pinecrest! 🍂

The mantel got its autumn makeover: wheat bundles, a painted songbird plate, and a heap of leaves and pumpkins. On the sunporch, the trees are still holding on to summer green, but the light has already started to shift. At the dining table, the pumpkin decor is a hint at the fall flavors served at breakfast this season.

Thursday at Biltmore Championship Asheville, with our fellow ABBA innkeepers. Shuttle in, coffee first, then a full day walking the course watching PGA TOUR golf up close.

Thanks to Jess for putting this together, and to Randy from Bent Creek for the company. Also pictured: Dan, still riding high from the 100-foot putt challenge in Historic Biltmore Village, and the Poppy Hand-Crafted Popcorn made just for the tournament, which we take no responsibility for finishing.

Peach season has handed the baton to apple season, but some things don't change: the fruit on your plate still comes from our favorite orchard Creasman Farms This morning that meant warm cinnamon apples piled over a made-from-scratch waffle, finished with a swirl of whipped cream and a dusting of powdered sugar.
