☔ Rainy Day at Rainier: 10 Things to Do When the Mountain's Socked In ☔
Rainier makes its own weather — sunrise pink one minute, clouds and sideways rain the next. If you drove all the way to Ashford and the mountain's a no-show, don't turn around. Here's your socked-in day plan 👇
🏛️ Longmire Museum — Warm, dry, free with park entry. Rainier's human & natural history in one small stop.
🏔️ Jackson Memorial Visitor Center (Paradise) — Glacier & climbing exhibits, plus rangers who know which low-elevation trails are handling the weather best.
🎒 Whittaker Mountaineering — Legendary gear shop in Ashford, founded by the son of the first American to summit Everest.
🍛 Wildberry Restaurant — Part restaurant, part mountaineering museum, run by Everest/Rainier summiter Sherpa Lhakpa Gelu & his wife. Nepalese food you won't find anywhere else nearby.
🚂 Elbe Steam Railroad — Historic railcars through the foothills, mostly indoor/covered. Runs Thu–Sun, book ahead.
🦌 Northwest Trek Wildlife Park — Bison, elk, moose & more via walking path or Jeep tour. No hiking required.
🎨 Ashford Art Gallery — Small, seasonal, local artists. Open weekends in fall/spring.
🎹 Alexander's Lodge — Hosting guests since 1902. Cozy coffee + history + the occasional piano player.
⚙️ Recycled Spirits of Iron Sculpture Park — Dan Klennert's scrap-metal creatures near Elbe. Quick, self-paced outdoor walk.
🛒 Ashford Valley Grocery + cabin reset — Sometimes the best plan is no plan. Stock up, cozy up, check the webcams.
💡 Bottom line: a foggy day at Rainier isn't a wasted one. Museums, gear shops, a legendary Nepalese restaurant, and a steam train — the clouds always lift eventually.
