Crater Lake National Park is only a 2-hour drive from our front door, but it always strikes me as a place that exists slightly outside of time.
My brother and his wife were recently in Ashland for a visit, so we took a quick late-season trip up the mountain โ and boy-o, did it deliver. โ๏ธ ๐ When we visited, the lake was glass-still, perfectly mirroring the calderaโs edge. Peaceful, quiet, and simply breathtaking.
Apparently, we got there just under the wire! Typically, roads to Crater Lake close around the beginning of November and don't open again until May or June, depending on the snowfall. As we walked around the Rim Village, I was floored by how tall the snow gauges are! Rim Village is at about 7000 feet, so I looked it up and learned that the record snowfall there was a whopping 879 inches (73 feet!) back in the winter of 1932โ33.
If youโre visiting Ashland in the spring, summer, or early fall, this iconic day trip is definitely worth the drive. โจ
