Iโ€™ve been spending a lot of time today thinking about something Dolly Parton said: โ€œ๐—™๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜ ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ผ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฑ๐—ผ ๐—ถ๐˜ ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฝ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ฒ.โ€

Well, she was certainly a woman who led by example. What a life well-lived.

Dolly earned her roses time and time again, using her platform to better the lives of literally countless people. She reinvented herself along the way, never letting other peopleโ€™s opinions define the limits of who she could be. She knew who she was, she knew what she had, and she never seemed to take any of it for granted.

And somehow, she also seemed like someone you could have lunch with. You could laugh with her, tell her your secrets, and listen to hers. Because Iโ€™m guessing Dolly had some secrets. We all do. Itโ€™s what we do with them that matters.

For my generation (Generation Jones!), Dolly was more than a singer or a public figure. She was an icon. She stood with one foot firmly in country music and the other squarely on the pulse of the wider world. She was glamorous and funny, wildly talented and unapologetically herself. And underneath it all was a generosity of spirit that seemed to grow right along with her fame.

For the longest time, though, I thought of her primarily as an entertainer. But the creation of her Imagination Library โ€“ which gives free books to children around the world โ€“ and her enthusiastic embrace of her role as "The Book Lady" allowed me to see her with greater clarity.

As of today, Dollyโ€™s books-to-kids program has gifted 332,411,218 books. Think about that. How many children has she reached? How many lives has she changed? How many generations has she lifted simply by putting books into little hands?

โ€ And she did exactly that.

Rest well, Dolly. You left us a remarkable legacy.

The basil has decided it's time to bloom, and I couldn't be happier about it.

A while back, I was listening to the Office Ladies Podcast (Episode 294 โ€“ Dwight's Mustard Shirt & Pam's Cardigans), where they answered a listener question about sharing a "dainty delight" โ€“ one of those tiny, ordinary moments that brings an unexpected spark of joy. The opposite of a pet peeve.

The term was new to me, and it immediately caught my attention. A dainty delight โ€“ what a wonderful way to look at the world! One of mine, for example, is walking into the kitchen to check the oven when the timer is exactly five seconds from going off. ๐Ÿ˜Š IYKYK

Right now, basil blossoms are another. Most of our basil will end up in breakfasts and summer suppers โ€“ fresh on the plate now, dried for cooler days ahead โ€“ but I always save a few flowering stems for the kitchen windowsill. Watching those tiny blossoms open is a dainty delight all its own.

There's a different kind of satisfaction, though, in stepping into the backyard, snipping a handful of fresh herbs, and having them on the table just minutes later.

What's one of your dainty delights?

This little tomato is a Sweet Sue Dwarf โ€“ the lone survivor of our first greenhouse tomato experiment. At just about two inches across, she's not exactly a giant, but I couldn't be prouder of her.

She may very well end up being the only tomato we harvest this summer, but this first season with the greenhouse has taught me so much. I'm slowly learning how to regulate Southern Oregon's summer heat inside the greenhouse, while at the same time gently convincing the local wildlife that I am not, in fact, cultivating an all-you-can-eat buffet just for them. (We have strands of beads hanging in the doorway to discourage the birds and a baby gate across the entrance to keep out the deer.)

There's still so much to learn, and I know each season that passes will bring a whole new set of lessons. But it's all about the journey, right? And who knows? Maybe in a couple of years we'll be harvesting bushels of tomatoes. Honestly though, I'd be perfectly happy with enough to keep our breakfast table stocked all season. ๐Ÿ…

Who says you can't have chocolate for breakfast? ๐Ÿ˜Š

I was absolutely delighted when one of our guests chose Biscuits & Chocolate Gravy from our breakfast menu when they made their reservation! They stayed with us this week, and I had so much fun making this Southern favorite, served with bacon and eggs. (If you dip your fries in your Frosty, you'd love it!)

Believe it or not, this was the very first time we've had the opportunity to serve chocolate gravy since opening Parkside Acoustic B&B a year ago. It's little requests like this that make hosting so much fun. We love sharing our own favorite breakfasts, but we also love the chance to make something that's special to our guests and brings back happy memories.

We keep a guest book in each room, and over time each one is evolving into a sort of scrapbook of the people we've had the privilege of knowing, even if only for a few days. As we flip through the pages, we remember the faces, the breakfast conversations, and the little moments that made each stay unique.

Every now and then, someone leaves behind something truly special. Recently, we opened the Troubadour Room guest book to find this sweet sketch, drawn by a daughter of her mom enjoying a quiet morning on the porch. What a thoughtful gift to leave behind.

To this wonderful family, thank you for your kind words, for this beautiful drawing, and for allowing us to share it. We loved having you here, and we'd be delighted to welcome you back anytime.

This morning, one of our breakfast guests asked what herbs were on their avocado tartine.

"Basil and arugula sprouts," I said. Then I casually added that we grow them in our greenhouse, which we built ourselves using old windows salvaged during the house renovation. (I immediately had to laugh at myself โ€“ it sounded like I was checking boxes on some sort of sustainable-living bingo card.)

But it also made me stop and think about how much has changed in the last couple of years. Not that long ago, there was no greenhouse and no herb garden supplying the kitchen. Of course, back then, the only people gathered around our breakfast table were Rick and me.

We are so grateful for this little place, for the chance we have to build it with our own hands, and for the wonderful people who pass through our doors and become part of the story.

Happy 1st Anniversary to us!! ๐Ÿฅณ A year ago today, we welcomed our very first guests to Parkside Acoustic. We've shared breakfasts, baked a lot of cookies, listened to stories, made new friends, and met people from all over. We've also learned โ€“ a lot.

We're incredibly grateful to everyone who has stayed with us, cheered us on, recommended us to friends, or followed along during this first year.

Here's to Year Two. โค๏ธ

A peek at breakfast here at Parkside Acoustic Bed & Breakfast ๐Ÿ’

This one is a guest favorite: silky, custardy individual cherry clafoutis, topped with a dollop of honey-lemon yogurt and a sprig of fresh mint from the garden. Alongside it โ€“ crispy breakfast potatoes, morning glory muffins, and fresh fruit.

I love watching our guests wander up into the dining room sleepy-eyed, and seeing their faces light up when something special like this lands on the table. It never gets old.

We had the chance to see ๐—–๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ ๐—™๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—บ ๐—”๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜† at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival last weekend. Iโ€™m not sure Iโ€™ve ever left a performance feeling so thoughtfully uplifted.

What I expected was a well-done musical. What I didnโ€™t expect was to walk out carrying memories I hadnโ€™t revisited in years โ€“ or to be reminded so powerfully of how kind people can be in the middle of unimaginable circumstances.

This show tells the true story of the tiny town of Gander, Newfoundland, which suddenly found itself caring for 7,000 stranded airline passengers after 9/11. Itโ€™s funny, moving, innovative, and deeply human.

I wrote a little about the experience on the B&B blog โ€“ including the strange tenderness of remembering something so collectively painful alongside a room full of strangers.
