Hut(s) of the Month: Continental Divide and Point Breeze Cabins!

Just off Tennessee Pass outside Leadville, two cabins sit nestled among the trees, ready to welcome hut trippers of all ages and abilities: the Continental Divide and Point Breeze Cabins.

Privately owned (and built!) by longtime resident Lee Rimel, these cabins are among the most accessible huts in the 10th Mountain Division Hut system, making them an ideal option for family hut trips, as well as beginners. That said, their location — just off the famed Continental Divide Trail — makes these huts an excellent gateway to adventure for even the most experienced hut trippers, and offers great recreation opportunities across all seasons.

Read more about these fantastic, family-friendly cabins, and Lee's personal story, in our latest Hut of the Month feature here on our blog:

This Memorial Day, we honor the brave military personnel who gave their lives in service to our country — and we pay special tribute to the soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division, whose legacy lies at the heart of our mission here at the 10th Mountain Division Huts Association.

From the battlefields of World War II to the peaks and valleys we ski, hike, and explore today, the courage, resilience, and sacrifice of the 10th Mountain Division soldiers continue to inspire us.

Today and everyday, we remember those who served, those we lost, and the enduring spirit they left behind.

Exploring the history behind the Polar Star Inn and Seipel Hut, it all starts with one man: John Seipel, the original owner, designer, builder, hutmaster and caretaker of the Polar Star Inn.

Read about John’s story with founding the Polar Star Inn, and his broader impact on the 10th Mountain Division Hut system, in our latest blog post!

Spring is here in the Rockies, and while the Winter hut season has officially wound down across many of our huts, there’s still plenty of opportunity for hut trips during these beautiful and quiet Spring months.

Looking to add a trip to your calendar for May or June? Here are the huts in our system that are open for all or part of this time: Broome Hut; Continental Divide & Point Breeze Cabins; High Lonesome Hut; Polar Star Inn & Seipel Hut; Shrine Mountain Inn; and Braun & Friends’ Huts (open through May 31st).

Spring hut trips are always a fun adventure, but do come with important considerations, and require additional preparation due to the highly variable conditions this time of year. Hut visitors should be prepared to employ various modes of travel en route to a hut (like both bikes and skis, as pictured here!), and be prepared to encounter varying trail and weather conditions. They should also be prepared to carry in water as needed, and to hike/snowshoe into routes that may be drivable in summer, but currently still have road closure gates, or heavy snowdrifts blocking parts of the road.

Calling all experienced winter hut trippers! Reservations for huts in the Alfred A. Braun System, as well as the Friends’ Hut, for next winter season open Friday, May 1st at 8am MT. At that time, hut users can make their reservation for any of the below huts by booking online at www.huts.org (recommended!), or by calling our reservation line at 970-925-5775.

Bookings will be open for the following huts: Barnard, Goodwin-Greene, Lindley, Markley, Opa Taylor, Tagert, and Friends’ Hut.

To note, reservations for the NEW Green Wilson Hut will open on another date later this year — stay tuned for more information and updates on timing. In the meantime, you can help support the fundraising effort for the rebuilding of this beloved hut by visiting www.braunhuts.org/future and making a gift today!

*As a reminder, the Braun and Friends’ Huts are located in remote, avalanche-prone terrain. Trips to these huts are considered a serious backcountry endeavor, and demand careful planning, and trained skills in travel, navigation, and decision making in the backcountry.*

Help Support the Green Wilson Hut Rebuild!

For our April Hut of the Month feature, we’re excited to highlight the Green Wilson Hut, a favorite destination within the storied Alfred A. Braun Hut System that is set to be rebuilt this year.

The Braun Huts team is asking for support from the Colorado hut community and fellow backcountry enthusiasts to help reach its $2 million funding goal for the Green Wilson Hut rebuild, and help preserve this cherished community resource for many decades to come.

Visit www.braunhuts.org/future to learn more about the fundraising effort, and to make your gift today. Right now, there is a $100,000 matching gift in place, which will double your impact!

Designed by architect Al Beyer, the new Green Wilson Hut will be built at its current location, with structural improvements designed to withstand the heavy snow loads typical of Colorado’s high alpine environment, and will also be fire resilient – helping to ensure an enduring mountain refuge for the next generation of hutgoers. The new design will maintain the intimate scale and 8-person capacity of the original hut, with three improved cozy sleeping rooms, while adding a dedicated entry room for gear storage, and a bright common space with south-facing windows to showcase the surrounding views. The hut will also boast a highly efficient passive solar design.

Visit the links below to learn more about the new hut, and how you can help support the project!

Spring has officially sprung here in the Colorado high country! ☀️ There’s still plenty of good snow (and fun turns!) to be found up high and around the huts, but hut visitors should expect variable conditions on their routes in/out of the huts, and be prepared to do some boot packing down low on most routes.

With conditions changing daily this time of year, we’re encouraging our hut users to share field reports from your time at the huts, to help inform groups that may be coming in after you about current snow/trail conditions. You can tag us here on social, post directly on our user forum — accessible under the ‘Booking’ tab on our homepage at huts.org, or give us a call (970-925-5775) or email ([email protected]) to share what you’re seeing.

Thank you in advance for sharing your observations, and helping us help you! 😊 We’re wishing everyone a great spring of hut tripping out there!
