We get by with a little help from our friends! Thank you so much to all of our volunteers and team members who joined in on our recent Betty Bear Hut volunteer session (only some of whom are pictured here!). Together, we were able to complete a host of key maintenance projects that will help ensure the hut stays in amazing shape for all visitors through the winter season, and for many more years to come. 🙌

Tucked against the ridges of the Holy Cross Wilderness, Harry Gates Hut stands at the edge of a meadow, overlooking scenic Lime Park.

One of the largest 10th Mountain-owned huts, it offers a spacious design and welcoming atmosphere, reminiscent of a refuge in the Austrian Tyrol.

With a large deck and expansive windows, this hut serves up stunning views of the surrounding wilderness and nearby Avalanche Peak, and incredible mountain sunsets.

Situated at 9,700 feet, it is also one of the lowest-elevation huts in the 10th Mountain Hut System.

With the Willow Fire actively burning Northwest of Leadville, our thoughts are with the firefighters and emergency personnel working tirelessly to battle the blaze, and with all those currently impacted by the fire.

First and foremost, we hope everyone is staying safe, and we extend immense gratitude to the crew members helping to protect the Leadville and extended Lake County communities.

As those familiar with our hut system may know, we do have huts located in the Leadville area. The Uncle Bud’s and Skinner Huts are currently closed to all visitors, and our team is communicating directly with folks who have upcoming reservations at these two huts. If closures at other huts become necessary due to fire activity, our team will also communicate with those reservation holders directly.

Please note that the U.S. Forest Service has issued closures for sections of the Continental Divide Trail and Colorado Trail in this area. For official evacuation zones, please monitor the Lake County Office of Emergency Management page.

As fire activity picks up around the state, we encourage all hut users to be fire-aware, adhere to all designated fire restrictions, and familiarize themselves with the Wildfire Information on our website’s Field Info page before heading out on any summer hut trip. Please reach out to our reservations team with any questions.

Once again, THANK YOU to the courageous teams fighting this and other fires across Colorado. Stay safe!

Here at the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association, we are proud to partner with various organizations doing incredible work across fields tied closely to our own mission and operations — work that lies close to our hearts.

Below is a list of the organizations we collaborate most closely with, and that we also support financially through annual contributions:

▪️Winter Wildlands Alliance
▪️Colorado Mountain Club
▪️Colorado Avalanche Information Center - CAIC
▪️Colorado Search and Rescue Association - CSAR

While these key partnerships extend well beyond financial support, we are pleased to help directly fund their vital work.

✨Best of all, every time you book a reservation or visit a hut in our system, you are helping support them, too!✨

Because their work is so critical to our collective outdoor experiences, we want to share more about these partners with our hut community — and also encourage you to engage with them directly to learn more.

Keep an eye on this space as we take a deeper dive into the respective missions and work of these fantastic groups. And, if you feel so inclined: give them a follow, visit their websites, and check out their membership pages to see how you can further support them.

Thank you for tuning in, and for helping us give back to the partners that keep us moving forward, together. 🏔️🤍

10th Mountain Division Huts is in the news! Thanks so much to AFAR and journalist Karthika Gupta for this great feature about the incredible hut trip opportunities available here in Colorado.

“The weathered timber and sharp angles of a hut came into view, and I realized with relief that I had reached the Polar Star Inn. This immediately felt like a different Colorado than what I had left behind at the trailhead six miles away—perched at 11,040 feet, this area was higher, quieter, and untamed.” - Karthika Gupta

There’s nothing we love more than seeing people getting out into the backcountry to experience all the magic a hut trip has to offer, and take in our beautiful mountains through a whole new lens!

Hut(s) of the Month: Continental Divide and Point Breeze Cabins!

Just off Tennessee Pass outside Leadville, two cabins sit nestled among the trees, ready to welcome hut trippers of all ages and abilities: the Continental Divide and Point Breeze Cabins.

Privately owned (and built!) by longtime resident Lee Rimel, these cabins are among the most accessible huts in the 10th Mountain Division Hut system, making them an ideal option for family hut trips, as well as beginners. That said, their location — just off the famed Continental Divide Trail — makes these huts an excellent gateway to adventure for even the most experienced hut trippers, and offers great recreation opportunities across all seasons.

Read more about these fantastic, family-friendly cabins, and Lee's personal story, in our latest Hut of the Month feature here on our blog:

This Memorial Day, we honor the brave military personnel who gave their lives in service to our country — and we pay special tribute to the soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division, whose legacy lies at the heart of our mission here at the 10th Mountain Division Huts Association.

From the battlefields of World War II to the peaks and valleys we ski, hike, and explore today, the courage, resilience, and sacrifice of the 10th Mountain Division soldiers continue to inspire us.

Today and everyday, we remember those who served, those we lost, and the enduring spirit they left behind.
