For more than a century, the McInteer Villa has stood overlooking Atchison. ☀️

The city around it has changed. Generations have come and gone. Businesses have opened and closed. Neighborhoods have grown.

Yet each evening, the setting sun casts its final light across the same brick walls that have stood since 1890.

Historic homes like McInteer Villa remind us that while the world is always changing, some places continue quietly carrying the stories of those who came before us.

Every sunset marks another day in the life of the Villa, and another opportunity to preserve its history for those who will one day stand here after us.

Because history isn’t only found in books. Sometimes it’s found in the places that have watched generations pass by.

Preserving history isn’t always easy, but it is always worth it. 🏚️✨

When we took a closer look at the historic windows here at the McInteer Villa, we realized just how much love and attention they needed.

Decades of time had taken their toll: many panes were badly cracked, jellying with age, and some were completely missing.

Protecting the Villa from the elements while staying true to its historic character was a huge priority for our preservation efforts.

Enter the incredible team at Topline Glassworks ! 🙌

We want to send a massive thank you to their team for stepping up to help us tackle this project. Thanks to their skill and dedication, we were able to replace those damaged and missing windows, keeping the Villa secure, beautiful, and ready for many more years to come.

This month, we commemorate the life and legacy of John McInteer, who passed away on July 17, 1902.

His journey from a young Irish immigrant arriving in America to becoming one of Kansas' most successful self-made businessmen is a true pioneer story.

After settling in Atchison in the 1860s, McInteer built a thriving harness and saddle manufacturing trade that supplied countless travelers heading west. He poured his success directly into the community, culminating in the construction of his grand, late-Victorian mansion.

Today, the McInteer Villa continues to stand on one of Atchison's most prominent corners as a testament to his vision, determination, and lasting architectural mark on Kansas history.

Over the past several days, many of you have seen social media posts circulating regarding the McInteer Villa.

Because those posts have now reached a wide audience, we believe it's important to address the situation directly.

1. The Reservation Conflict

First, there was a legitimate reservation conflict, and we sincerely apologize to the guests affected.

When we purchased the McInteer Villa, we inherited reservation records from the previous ownership that were incomplete and, in many cases, lacked the documentation necessary to independently verify reservations. Since taking ownership, we have worked diligently to reconcile inherited reservations, often learning of bookings only when guests arrived at the property because reservation information had never been transferred to current ownership. We continue to have multiple surprise bookings that we were not aware of because of this.

While we have gone above and beyond to honor inherited reservations whenever possible, we can no longer honor reservations that cannot be verified through reliable documentation. Our responsibility is to ensure that every guest who arrives at the Villa has a confirmed reservation and a safe, positive experience.

2. The Photos and Claims Circulating Online

The reservation conflict and the allegations now circulating online are two separate issues.

Many of the photographs and claims being shared on social media do not reflect the condition in which our staff maintains the Villa. We dispute the portrayal of events that has been presented online.

The McInteer Villa is equipped with nearly two dozen security cameras throughout the property. In addition, our team documents the condition of the Villa before, during, and after guest stays, as well as throughout our ongoing restoration work. Those records, together with photographs taken today, do not support the claims currently circulating online. We are sharing current photographs alongside this statement so the public can see the Villa as it actually exists.

One image in particular has understandably generated significant concern - a photograph of a toilet seat. That image does not reflect the condition in which the Villa is prepared for guests. The Villa is cleaned and inspected between every reservation and throughout ongoing construction and restoration work. We believe people deserve to evaluate the Villa based on its actual condition rather than a single disputed image.

The reservation in question was made through the previous ownership and was governed by the rules established before we acquired the property. Those rules included restrictions on access to certain areas of the home, including the bedrooms and showers, which were under construction. Public statements describing conditions in those restricted areas indicate those spaces were entered despite not being included as part of the reservation.

3. Just as Important: Our Staff

Perhaps the most disappointing part of this situation has been the treatment of the people who work every day to care for the McInteer Villa.

The "strangers" referenced in online posts are not strangers. They are members of our local Atchison team - people who clean, maintain, restore, secure, and improve this historic property for every guest who visits.

During this reservation, local staff were installing additional air-conditioning units, setting up improved guest amenities, including a new coffee bar and refrigerator, and preparing the Villa for future visitors. Instead of being allowed to do their jobs, they were told to leave the property where they are employed, verbally berated, and publicly criticized while simply carrying out responsibilities assigned by their employer. One of those berated by this group is a teenager.

Our local Atchison staff and remote staff are real people who are being attacked and threatened at their jobs, on social media, and privately. No disagreement over ownership or reservations ever justifies treating another person with disrespect.

Since acquiring the Villa, we have invested significantly in improving guest comfort, safety, and preservation by implementing new climate control, upgrading guest amenities, furnishings, and supplies, and undertaking ongoing restoration projects. All amenities are on-site and provided from the coffee to toilet paper to thousands of dollars in new equipment, including water coolers, coffee makers, hand and bath towels, curtains, bedding, rugs, AC units, cleaning and bath supplies, and even cat food. This work continues every day because we are committed to preserving and caring for this extraordinary historic home.

We recognize that some individuals disagree with the change in ownership. We respect that not everyone will agree with the sale. However, disagreements over ownership should never result in harassment of employees, damage to a historic property, or the spread of information that discourages others from experiencing this important landmark.

We welcome anyone who genuinely cares about the McInteer Villa to visit, see the restoration efforts firsthand, and judge our work based on facts rather than photos posted with negative intent. In fact, since we have taken over, we have had many bookings, received positive comments, and continue to receive reservations for upcoming stays.

4. What Happens Next
To protect both our guests and the Villa, we are implementing the following policy effective immediately:

✅ Reservations that have already been confirmed directly with current ownership will be honored.

❌ Reservations made through the previous ownership that cannot be independently verified through reliable documentation will be canceled effective immediately.

📧 If you believe you have an existing reservation that has not yet been confirmed, please contact us immediately with any documentation you have so we can review your booking.

🚫 Any guest who intentionally damages the property, violates the terms of their reservation, or publicly states an intention to disrupt operations, harm the Villa, or to berate our employees will have their reservation canceled immediately. Our responsibility is to protect this historic home, our employees, and every respectful guest who visits.

A piece of McInteer Villa's history has been reopened! 🏡

As part of our ongoing restoration efforts, we've opened up the entrance to the gift shop and the porch. By removing the glass panes that had sealed it off, we've restored access to this historic exterior space, marking the first time in decades this entryway has been opened once again.

We are uncovering so much history along the way! Much of the outside work currently being restored dates back to the 1970s or earlier. Inside, we are working hard to preserve the home's authentic charm. Many of the door handles throughout the house are original to the building, and according to our locksmith, they are allegedly 100 years old or more!

While many of the original handles were still in place, we will be meticulously adding many of the historic door hinges and handles back to their rightful spots throughout the Villa.

This entrance is already welcoming guests into the Villa's gift shop, blending the home's historic character with a new visitor experience.

Stay tuned as we continue sharing our restoration progress, including the gift shop and many more exciting transformations still to come! ✨
