🌍 Wonder of the Week #13: Stonehenge, England 🪨

Last week we left you with a mystery:

Our next Wonder has been standing for thousands of years...and we're still not completely sure why it was built.

Welcome to Stonehenge.

People began shaping this remarkable site around 5,000 years ago, long before modern machinery, metal tools or even the wheel had arrived in Britain. Later, enormous stones were transported, shaped and raised to create the monument we recognize today.

And here's where things get fascinating.

Some of Stonehenge's smaller bluestones came from more than 150 miles away in Wales. Its builders also carefully aligned the monument with the movements of the sun, including the summer and winter solstices.

But why?

A ceremonial gathering place? A monument connected to ancestors and the dead? A place marking the seasons? A spiritual center?

Archaeology has given us tantalizing clues, and the leading interpretation connects Stonehenge with ceremony, ancestors and the movements of the sun. But nobody can ask its builders what they intended, so part of Stonehenge's story remains tantalizingly out of reach.

Yesterday we asked which South American country is home to the world's largest salt flat, Salar de Uyuni.

The correct answer is...

Located in southwestern Bolivia, Salar de Uyuni stretches across more than 4,000 square miles, making it the largest salt flat on Earth.

💚 Fun Fact: During the rainy season, a thin layer of water can cover the salt flat, creating an enormous natural mirror. The horizon seems to disappear as the sky reflects across the surface, producing some truly spectacular photographs.

✈️ Condor Tip: Salar de Uyuni can be part of a much bigger Bolivian adventure. Pair it with the colorful Laguna Colorada, otherworldly desert landscapes, geothermal areas, and time exploring La Paz for a South American journey that's anything but ordinary.

Lori loves her job! 🌿🦍

Another extraordinary day for Lori and Allie Snow in Uganda, this time deep in the legendary Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for a gorilla tracking experience she won’t soon forget.

After trekking through the rainforest, there they were. A mountain gorilla family, just a few feet away, completely at home in the forest around them. Moments like these are why we travel.

And the Snow gals aren’t finished yet! They head back into Bwindi tomorrow to track another gorilla family, so stay tuned. There’s more Uganda to come. 🦍🌿

Wonder of the Week #12: Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany

Last week we promised you a fairy-tale castle with a story involving a king, a mysterious death and some seriously extravagant taste.

Meet Neuschwanstein Castle, perched high in the Bavarian Alps.

King Ludwig II commissioned this spectacular retreat in 1869, creating a romantic fantasy of towers, turrets, lavish rooms and dramatic mountain views. But Ludwig would never see his dream completed.

In 1886, the king was declared unfit to rule and removed from power. The following day, Ludwig and the psychiatrist accompanying him were found dead in Lake Starnberg. His death was officially attributed to drowning, but the circumstances surrounding it have inspired questions and theories for more than a century.

Just weeks after his death, the castle he built as a private escape was opened to the public. And what an escape it is. Neuschwanstein's storybook appearance later helped inspire Disney's fairy-tale castle designs, and today it's one of the most recognizable castles in the world.
