🦦🌊 SEA OTTER AWARENESS WEEK!
We’re sharing some cool facts about these incredible marine mammals this week!
A few things you may not know about sea otters:
🦦 They can have up to 1 MILLION hairs per square inch. They have the densest fur of any animal on Earth, and unlike many marine mammals, they rely on that incredible coat rather than a thick layer of blubber to stay warm.
🪨 They use tools! Sea otters use rocks to crack open clams, mussels and other hard-shelled meals.
👜 They have built-in pockets. Loose skin under their forearms allows them to stash food and sometimes tools while diving.
🍽️ Their belly becomes the dinner table. They’ll float on their backs and work on their meal right on their chest.
😳 They can eat around 20–30% of their body weight every day. Staying warm in cold water takes a LOT of energy.
🧼 And all that rolling, rubbing and grooming? It’s actually important. Keeping their incredibly dense fur clean and properly aerated helps it trap the air they need for insulation.
Another amazing marine animal and another reminder that healthy beaches and clean water matter. What gets left on the shoreline can eventually make its way into the water. Pick up the trash, keep plastics and fishing line out of our waters, respect the wildlife and protect the places they call home. 💙🌊
