Sharing from Maine Fall Foliage 🍁🎃⛅ Maine's 2026 Fall Foliage Season Goes Out with a Bang!

AUGUSTA, Maine - As we wrap up this season's foliage reports, thank you for sharing your autumn adventures through emails and comments on the Maine Foliage page. Your photos, favorite views and stories helped us celebrate fall in every corner of Maine.

"From the rocky coast to the deep woods of the north, Maine put on quite a show! While the leaves may be letting go and as Maine bids adieu to another spectacular fall foliage season, there is still plenty of fall left. Who knows, you might even catch a little 'snowliage in northern Maine (when a dusting of snow meets the last of the fall foliage)," said Gale Ross, DACF fall foliage spokesperson.

This may be our final report of the season, but autumn has more in store. From glowing jack-o-lanterns and coastal harvest festivals to scenic drives and seaside walks, October offers plenty of reasons to get outside and savor the season. Find out more at mainefoliage.com

Sharing from Maine Fall Foliage 🍁🎃⛅ Peak Conditions are Closing in for the Upcoming Holiday Weekend

AUGUSTA, Maine - The Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry's (DACF) Foliage Report for October 7 to October 13 indicates moderate to high color change (50 to 70 percent) throughout most of the state. Maine Forest Rangers in northern and western Maine have reported past peak conditions, with high leaf drop.

"Peak foliage is closing in on this long holiday weekend in central, coastal, and southern Maine. Despite the lack of rain this summer, Maine did not disappoint. The colors are phenomenal! It's the perfect time to soak up Maine's spectacular colors and enjoy the many fall events happening statewide over the next couple of weeks. Downeast Maine's (zone 4) cranberry bogs and blueberry barrens are putting on their own foliage show this week," said Gale Ross, DACF fall foliage spokesperson.

Mainers and visitors can look forward to a spectacular display of fall colors spreading across the state this week. The fourth 2026 Fall Foliage Report from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) reports moderate to peak color change (30-70 percent) throughout Maine with low (less than 30 percent) leaf drop.

“I’m going to go out on a limb and say this weekend is shaping up to be the gem of all gems for leaf enthusiasts in Maine! The weekend nor’easter brought some beneficial rain, but thankfully, it didn’t bring down the leaves. Our forest rangers report that leaf drop remains relatively low across much of the state which makes it the perfect time to hit the road and find one of the many activities in Maine this weekend,” notes Gale Ross, DACF fall foliage spokesperson.

Fall color is spreading across Maine, giving residents and visitors more signs of the season! This week's report shows 30-70 percent color change throughout most of Maine. Northern Maine (zones 6 and 7) is seeing significant color change, though still below 70 percent. Leaf drop remains low to moderate, at less than 50 percent.

"Autumn's arrival has flipped the switch on Maines fall colors this week with significant colors showing up across the state with the arrival of the equinox. The lack of rain has certainly played a part in accelerating the progression of the color throughout Maine, which can signal a shorter foliage season. But dont let that stop you from following the leaves this upcoming weekend with all the outdoor activities Maine has to offer. Be mindful of the potential impact of the approaching noreaster, especially along the coast," said Gale Ross, DACF fall foliage spokesperson.

The report shows generally less than 10 percent color change statewide, with some areas of northern and western Maine approaching 30 percent. Leaf drop remains very low throughout Maine. Typically, northern Maine (zones 6 and 7) reaches peak conditions between the last week of September and the first week of October. Color change moves from north to south, with peak conditions for the rest of the state expected by mid-October. Coastal Maine usually experiences peak foliage from mid-to late October.

"In our first foliage report, we explained how summer and fall weather help set the stage for Maine's foliage season. Now, let's introduce the stars of the show: the trees. Maples, birches, and aspens have relatively shallow root systems and can respond differently to dry conditions than deeper-rooted oaks and beeches. Each species also contributes its own signature color, from the reds and oranges of maples and the yellows of birches and aspens to the deeper russet tones of oaks. Right now, the leaves are 'falling into place," said Gale Ross, DACF fall foliage spokesperson.
