OCTOBER 15TH UPDATE: AVALON BEACH FILL ENTERS ITS FINAL STAGES, MORE THAN ONE MILLION CUBIC YARDS OF SAND ON THE BEACH

The Avalon beach fill project is entering its final stages. To date, 1,007,912 cubic yards of sand have been placed on the north end beaches. During the past 24 hours, 29,664 cubic yards of sand were placed on the Avalon beaches. The dredge “Delaware” is expected to finish the beach fill this week. Beach paths are closed between 20-27th streets for construction activity. The United States Army Corps of Engineers has added 100,000 cubic yards of additional sand to this project that will be concentrated in the north end where some sand loss occurred during the late September nor’easter. Following that work, Norfolk Dredging will conduct the dredging of Townsend’s Inlet which will add up to 135,800 cubic yards of sand to the beach while improving navigational safety.

VIEW: PLANS FOR NEW GRACE O'BRIEN PARK IN AVALON

The Avalon Borough Council received a presentation from Scott Taylor from Taylor Design Group on new plans for Grace O'Brien Park located at 8th Street and Ocean Drive in Avalon. The plans call for new playground equipment accessible to children who have physical limitations, the preservation and enhancement of greenspace, and four bocce courts. The Borough intends to make an application to the Cape May County Open Space Program for funding support. Construction is anticipated to commence during the first quarter of 2027.

AVALON APPROVES AGREEMENT WITH NORFOLK DREDGING COMPANY TO IMPROVE NAVIGATIONAL SAFETY IN TOWNSEND'S INLET

The Borough of Avalon has entered into an agreement with Norfolk Dredging Company to remove up to 135,800 cubic yards of material from the Townsend's Inlet navigation channel. The sand removed will be placed on the Borough's beachfront in the north end for storm protection. The Borough successfully negotiated a seven-party agreement to achieve this dredging project as Norfolk Dredging is close to finishing the Avalon beach fill project. Permits were secured from the United States Army Corps of Engineers and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. A Shared Services Agreement now exists between Avalon, Sea Isle City, the County of Cape May, and the County Bridge Commission to cost share on this project. The navigational channel is the responsibility of no singular entity for routine dredging maintenance. A 150-foot-wide cut will be made to improve safe navigation and to preserve the commercial and boating recreational interests. The Inlet is responsible for between $15-21 million of economic activity annually.
