The iconic Cal Poly Pier in Avila Beach stretches nearly 3,000 feet into San Luis Bay! It was originally built in 1984 for oil transport and was donated to Cal Poly in 2001, where it was transformed into a one-of-a-kind marine research facility used by students and scientists every year.

Fun bonus fact: The pier is typically closed to the public, but once a year Cal Poly hosts a special Pier Open House in the fall, giving visitors a rare opportunity to walk the entire pier, explore interactive exhibits, meet marine scientists, and learn about local ocean life. For 2026, the event is scheduled for Saturday, October 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

One more reason to love exploring beautiful Avila Beach and the unique history that surrounds it. 💙
