The REAL Southern Outer Banks - SOBX
RODANTHE:
Where the Atlantic has apparently decided zoning laws are merely suggestions. Everybody knows it from Nights in Rodanthe, but the ocean knows it as an all-you-can-eat housing buffet and randomly claims another beach house whenever it gets hungry. Locals have watched so many storms come through they can identify a hurricane by the sound the screen door makes. Visitors rent an oceanfront house, then spend the entire week nervously checking how much "oceanfront" they have left.
WAVES:
Rodanthe’s quieter sibling and the middle child of the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo situation, where even people who vacation here every year aren’t completely sure when they’ve crossed from one into another. Locals fish, surf, kiteboard, and generally understand that weather forecasts are more like suggestions. Visitors come here specifically because Nags Head had too many people, then immediately ask where the nearest Target is.
SALVO:
This is where people live who actually want to live at the beach. They can fry their own fish, fix whatever broke that morning, and have somehow made it their entire lives without setting foot inside a Wings. Visitors are mostly people who finally figured out that "getting away from it all" means you cannot also demand a Starbucks every six miles.
AVON:
No, not the funny smelling perfume your mama bought at somebody’s living room party while you were told to go play outside. This Avon is basically downtown Hatteras Island, meaning there’s a Food Lion, some restaurants, tackle shops, and enough civilization to make everyone south of here slightly suspicious. Visitors arrive thinking they’ve finally reached the remote Outer Banks, then see the grocery store and realize they’ve got another hour of driving to do.
BUXTON:
The big city of the southern Outer Banks, provided your definition of "big city" includes a lighthouse, tackle shops, and something enormous, fried and apple filled that requires both hands and absolutely no concern for dignity. Locals can discuss hurricanes by name going back decades and know exactly how high the water got during each one. Tourists come for the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, take 47 pictures of it, and leave with powdered sugar on their shirts and upset its' been covered in scaffolding for 4 years, with 4 more to go.
FRISCO:
We’re still reasonably certain aliens had something to do with this place. For years there was what looked like an actual flying saucer sitting beside the highway until somebody hauled it off to what we can only assume is a top secret government location. Frisco itself is laid back to the point of horizontal. Now you can get your coffee at a place run by one of them that stayed, Alien Java Co. The locals like their space, the visitors like the beach, and neither group came all this way because they wanted nightlife.
HATTERAS:
The end of Highway 12, where you finally run out of road and start negotiating with boats. It’s a village built around fishing, ferries, weather, and people who can look at the sound for six seconds and tell you something your weather app won’t know until tomorrow. Visitors arrive with enough luggage for a military deployment, unload it all, and then discover they forgot the one thing they actually needed. DO NOT EAT A BANANA IN THE FERRY LINE.
OCRACOKE:
As far away from the rest of North Carolina as you can reasonably get while still being in North Carolina. From Raleigh, getting here requires hours of driving, a ferry, patience, and eventually the realization that the inconvenience is the whole point. The people who live here are kindred souls who deliberately chose a place where the mainland cannot casually bother them. They have their own brogue, their own vocabulary, their own way of doing things, and absolutely no urgency about adopting yours.
Visitors to Ocracoke are different too. You don’t accidentally end up here. You earn Ocracoke. You wait in the ferry line, cross the sound, watch the mainland disappear behind you, and somewhere along the way your blood pressure drops about twenty points into bliss.
And then you understand why some of us get a little particular about what counts as the REAL Southern Outer Banks.
