Hatteras Island Access Update — September 25
Island life can be a little rough around the edges sometimes.
N.C. 12 is currently closed between the Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe, and we know that creates a lot of uncertainty — whether you’re trying to get to Hatteras Island or you’re already here wondering when you’ll be able to get back off.
If you’re stuck here, we know this can affect travel plans, work, flights, reservations and everything else waiting for you back home. Getting people who need to leave the island safely on their way is a priority.
N.C. 12 will reopen when crews determine it’s safe, and when conditions allow and service is available, the ferry system can also provide options for getting folks off the island.
The reassuring part is that Hatteras Island is used to weathering situations like this. Our road crews, ferry crews, emergency services, local businesses and communities know the drill. We’re well prepared for changing weather and changing conditions, and there are a lot of experienced people working to get everyone moving safely again.
So whether you’re waiting to come down or waiting to head home, hang in there. Safe access comes first. The island will get moving again, and we’ll share another update when there’s something meaningful to report.
