The Native American Tipi and the Sami Kåta

Two wonderful examples of mirrored vernacular architecture! Structures designed not just for shelter, but for a life of adventure camping. The tipi, with its iconic conical shape, was crafted by Plains tribes in North America for a nomadic lifestyle. Lightweight and quick to assemble, providing shelter against the elements; incredibly efficient, from the way it sheds wind to how it embraces fire in its center. On the other side of the globe, the Sami Kåta, evolved in the harsh Nordic / Scandinavian climate, shares the same essential form but is built to endure freezing temperatures and relentless winds. Both were designed to be in constant dialogue with nature, offering warmth, protection, and a place for community. Fast forward to today, we stole the concept to create a modern tipi structure that reimagines the Kåta’s design for todays times, blending ancient principles of vernacular architecture with contemporary materials like canvas and engineered fabric. The remix of a indigenous classic? A shelter that’s as adaptable and timeless as the traditions it’s built upon.
