Door County’s culinary roots go back to 19th‑century Scandinavian, Icelandic, and European settlers, but its reputation as a Midwestern food destination has really taken off in the last few decades. These days you can find everything from kid‑friendly casual eats to classic Wisconsin supper clubs, gourmet burgers and wings, and fine‑dining restaurants embracing global trends. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are about 131 restaurants and other eating places in Door County as of 2024 — a pretty tasty lineup for a rural peninsula!

Nelsen’s Hall on Washington Island sells more bitters than anywhere else in the world. In fact, they run something called “The Bitters Club.” You become a member by taking a shot of bitters.

The custom of drinking bitters here started during Prohibition as a way to skirt the laws against the sale of alcoholic beverages.
