Buckle up — because Maine didn’t come to play… 🌲🌊
This isn’t a road sign.
This is a pronunciation exam.
You thought you knew English…
then Maine said:
“Calais.”
Now you’re sweating before the seat warmers even kick in.
Saco? Easy.
Ogunquit? Not what you think.
Machias? Silent letters doing whatever they want.
Then Damariscotta shows up…
and suddenly you’re fighting for your life mid-sentence.
By the time you reach Penobscot,
you’re not reading anymore…
you’re just hoping nobody asks you to say it out loud.
And Mount Desert?
Pronounces it like “dessert” just to keep you guessing.
If you can say all of these correctly without hesitation…
Maine owes you a lobster roll,
a pine tree might nod in respect,
and even the black flies will give you a 5-minute break.
Maine isn’t just a place you drive through…
it’s a pronunciation survival test. 🌲🚗🌊

Maine legend says Pocomoonshine Lake is home to the state’s own "lake monster!" Known as the "Monster of Pocomoonshine Lake", this creature is said to be long, dark, and shaped like a huge snake with a fierce head. The story goes back to Algonquin legend. An Algonquin shaman and a Micmac chieftain argued and met on the lake to settle it. The shaman turned into a giant snail, while the Micmac became a serpent said to be nearly 40 feet long. The snail won and tied the serpent to a tree by the lake, but its spirit never left. European settlers wrote about the monster in 1882, though locals had spoken of it long before. People later reported strange ripples, dark shapes, and even curved trails near the shore. Some say it slipped between lakes. Today, the quiet lake is calm and clear, ringed by deep woods, still water, and a wild beauty that feels untouched...so as long as this legend doesn't worry you, it's one of the most beautiful lakes to spend time on in Maine!
