Thanks to everyone for your calls and texts regarding Bald Head Island. We don't have much information, but have been actively monitoring the ferry cameras on the island that are still working and social media. It is great to see that sunshine on the ferry camera today! We do know that 6 individuals chose to stay on the island rather than evacuate. All 6 are safe and accounted for and I am told they are in good spirits. They have not reported any structual damage although there are lots of trees down and some flooding (although we don't know how much!). Today the Village Emergency Operations Center is assessing the island to do an initial safety sweep. This will be the fiirst official information we will receive from the island. We were very fortunate that this ended up a category 2 storm instead of the initial forecast of a category 4! The island has weathered these types of storms before. Many infrastructure improvements have also been made to the island since the last hurricane came through. Due to the Village's Shoreline Management Program and beach stabilization efforts in recent years resulting in a more substantial primary frontal dune system, we hope the storm surge will not have the same effects as in previous storms. Furthermore, the Village and the BHI club (which our home is located right beside) implemented their floodwater management plan prior to the hurricane and began removing wather from the lagoons under our villa and into the Bald Head Creek. I am hopeful this will reduce the effect of flooding, although I expect with the amount of rain we had, we will still see some effects of flooding. Overall, I have been impressed with the way all the Bald Head Island property owners banded together to weather this storm. Our thoughts are with all of those impacted by this hurricane and expect that we will all remain "Carolina Strong".
