Greetings Friends! Over the last 3 years, increasing visitation has exceeded our capacity to provide a high quality visitor experience and protect park resources.

Beginning May 27, Balmorhea State Park will limit day-use visitation to 1,300 people. We will sell 1,000 day-use passes starting at 8:00 AM. The next 300 visitors will receive a pre-counted slip allowing them to return at 3:00 PM. Visitors with camping or hotel reservations will still be allowed in.

Plan to visit the park? Check our page and follow us on Twitter for closure updates. Please share this post!

Summer is right around the corner, and that means you might be planning your family vacation. If you're thinking of traveling to Balmorhea State Park there are changes in the near future you're going...

Big projects proposed for the Balmorhea State Park. Plans to overhaul the motel, make it more historic relative to the CCC construction in the late thirtys, with as much historic furnishing they can find and the rest will be replicas. Gonna cost a lot and take a while, starts in September. I don't know when it will be finished.

Also redo the restrooms, make them larger and more up to date with the plumbing and fixtures. Going to have a few portapots to relieve congestion this summer. They are talking about 4 portables, but that will not be sufficient on the crowded days,

This summer they are restricting visitors to 1000. At that point they will close the entrance. At 3:00 in the afternoon they will open back up for another 300 visitiors. The idea is that the early visitors will be leaving around that time. They are proposing signs that will notify tourists when they are full and when they can take more guests.

Parking outside the park will still be available. They are going to see if their system for admittance will stop the congestion on the highway. It if always hot waiting on the highway and quite stressful for the children.

If there is any way to come during the week it would be much less crowded. Saturdays are always the heavy traffic days. It is a first come first admitted basis. We have asked to be informed so that we can pass the information on.

Everyone is gearing up for the oil companies and workers to hit Balmorhea. Our population has increased by at least 20 rv's in the trailor parks this week. and Even as I write they are building more. If you can get a trailer in the space they will rent it too you. The I -10 trailer park has increased to about 50 spaces already. Man camps are coming and probably food trucks. This little town is going to explode if you can believe all the hype.

I got a nasty little review about a fat Corgie and Cat pet, ci******es and junk. The couple who wrote that were insulted because they g*t a room with two beds for two adults and 2 children. They then called friends and invited them to stay with them. Of course they were crowded, 4 adults and at least 3 children, in a 2 bed room. I stopped them as they were leaving and asked them not to come back. It is not our policy to over crowd the rooms.
The Corgi is my daughters and she is a very nice dog. She only visits in the lobby from time to time. The cat is a gentleman. He does not p*e inside and he doesn't stay in at night. He only comes in to sleep during the day. He is friendly and most of the guests like him. I don't want a dog or a cat. The cat was a homeless kitten thrown out by someone who didn't want him. My grandchildren fed him and he has been here since. He has been nuetered, has shots and is two years old now. All the medical attention and food have made him a valuable cat. I do feel responsible for him and he is kind of fun to watch.

Hoarder, that's still up in the air. This place was a real dump when I bought it. I do have lots of projects, just completed two tables, finished off two Mexican patio benches and would like to get rid of all the old Tv's I have taken out of the rooms. As a child of the depression, I find it hard to get rid of perfectly good stuff, but I guess as long as we have Walmart we don't rehab much.

Ci******es, my bad. I have chewed nic gum, plastered my self with patches but it doesn't work. I blame it on my college roommate. She made me smoke. I am part Indian, the feather kind, and I have a smoking gene, but not an alcohol gene, so you won't ever see me drunk,

It is always difficult when we cannot accommodate travelers, so the Cactus Motel would like to extend appreciation to Judge Rosendo Carrasco for opening up the Balmorhea Community Center so quickly after we made him aware that all motels were full and travelers were stranded. We also commend Mayor and Mrs. Davis and city employees for setting up cots and manning the shelter during that time of need.

Thanks, also, to Pastor Kenneth Martin of 1st Baptist Church for taking the overflow from the BCC shelter and for housing/hosting travelers.

Finally, many locals provided food and comfort to travelers, either at local eateries or by donations, so thanks also to the "angels" of Balmorhea - you are very special people!

All motels in town are full, however, stranded travelers may find shelter at the Community Center, located at 114 S. Main St.
