A restaurant in Ohio just closed its doors completely, put every single employee on a cruise ship, and sailed them to the Bahamas. All expenses paid.

Andrew Jackson had never been on a plane.

He had never been on a boat in the ocean either.

Then his bosses at The Standard restaurant in Toledo, Ohio handed him a boarding pass and told him to pack his bags.

The whole team was going to the Bahamas.

Chef Jeff Dinnebeil and his wife Megan Lingsweiler own The Standard, a popular upscale restaurant on Monroe Street in northwest Toledo. After a long and demanding holiday season, they wanted to do something for the people who had kept the place running.

Not a bonus check. Not a plaque on the wall.

A three-day Royal Caribbean cruise to Nassau and Bimini.

They got the idea after taking their own children on a cruise the year before and thinking: why not do this for the team? So they booked it. All of it. Cooks, servers, hosts, longtime customers, even a few former team members.

And they closed the restaurant entirely so that not a single person had to stay behind.

On board, there were karaoke nights, scavenger hunts, catered dinners, and a basketball competition. The group visited two islands. They ate together, laughed together, and somewhere between Nassau and the trip home, something shifted.

"Everybody went on there as employees," cook Andrew Jackson told the Toledo Blade, "and when we left and went back home, everybody was like family."

Server Allison Latta had been on cruises before. She thought she knew what to expect.

"I had been on cruises before, but this alone was probably my top vacation," she said. "It was just such a unique experience getting to see 60 of your co-workers around the boat."

Sixty coworkers. One ship. Three days in the sun.

Dinnebeil and Lingsweiler also gave out Christmas bonuses that same season. They've said openly that their team is the "lifeblood" of the business. The cruise was their way of meaning it.

For Andrew Jackson, the man who had never flown and never sailed, it was more than a vacation. It was the kind of thing you tell your grandchildren about.
