🪶 Loon Update: Our Feathered Neighbors Are Back! 🪺
We have some wonderful wildlife news to share! Our Loon Biologist from last year, Mike G., is back on Swains Lake for the 2026 season. We recently headed out on the water together for a scouting trip and had a very successful day tracking our local loon population.

Here is the latest scoop from the survey:
👥 Three Pairs Identified: We successfully located three distinct loon pairs making Swains Lake their home right now.
🆔 Banding Status: Out of the six total loons, three of them are banded from previous tracking efforts, and three are unbanded.
🪺 Nesting Watch: There are currently no nests built yet.

What's Next?
We expect the loons to start nesting within the next week or so—if the water levels accommodate it. As we've been tracking with the dam project, water levels play a huge role in where and when loons can safely build their nests along the shoreline without them getting flooded out.

⚓ A Quick Reminder for Boaters:
As nesting season kicks into high gear over the next few weeks, please keep a safe distance from our loons, keep an eye out for them while cruising, and remember our "No Balloons" rule for the upcoming boat parade to keep these beautiful birds safe!
