New Jersey State Parks are full of amazing places to explore, but also home to a variety of ticks. The most common species in New Jersey are the blacklegged (deer) tick, lone star tick and American dog tick, which can transmit diseases like Lyme, Babesiosis, Alpha-gal syndrome and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. A few simple steps can help keep your adventure bite-free!

Before you hit the trail:
🟢 Apply insect repellent
🟢 Wear light-colored clothing, long sleeves and long pants so ticks are easier to spot
🟢 Tuck clothes into your pants and socks

While exploring:
🟢 Stay on the center of marked trails and avoid brushing through tall grass and shrubs where ticks like to wait for passing hikers

After your adventure:
🟢 Check yourself, your friends and your pets for ticks
🟢 Shower immediately after to help wash away unattached ticks and to make it easier to find any that may be attached
🟢 If you find a tick, remove it promptly with fine-tipped tweezers by grasping it close to the skin and pulling straight upward

A quick tick check only takes a minute and it can help prevent tick-borne illnesses. Stay safe and enjoy everything New Jersey's state parks have to offer!

Smoke from wildfires in Minnesota and Canada continues to affect air quality across New Jersey today, Friday, July 17. New Jersey State Parks strongly encourages park visitors to limit outdoor activity, especially If you are in a sensitive group.

Due to the poor air quality, New Jersey State Parks is reducing capacity of swimming areas to allow lifeguards and park staff more frequent breaks.

New Jersey State Parks looks forward to welcoming visitors back to normal operations once air quality improves.
