Wednesday 1/19 Bastrop update: here is the fire burn area as of 10am. Camp Tom Wooten is located off this map, near the northeast shore of Lake Bastrop. In its media briefing this morning, the Texas A&M Forest Service fire team lead said they do not expect the fire to spread further today. The fire is now 30% contained and the hope is this evening's weather front will help further knock down the fire.

We have received some calls/messages concerning today’s wildfire in Bastrop County and whether any of our camps are in danger; they are not in imminent danger. As of 10pm Tuesday night, the fire line is southeast of Tom Wooten, holding along Power Plant Road and along SH21. Roads around Lost Pines/Tom Wooten are closed as fire crews work to prevent the fire from advancing. The weather forecast through tomorrow will help as winds change to the north with the front moving in. We are grateful to all the firefighters working to protect lives and property in the area.

It is with mixed emotions that I share the news that Roy Wallace will retire effective September 15, 2020.

I’m happy that Roy will be able to spend more time with his family in Conroe but sad to know the huge loss that will be felt by the Scouts, Scouters and Staff of Capitol Area Council.

We started talking about all the things that Roy has accomplished in his “one-year consulting job” that has lasted 7 years 7 months and 23 days in CAC-BSA.

Finally, after an extended conversation I asked him to just write down some of the highlights.

Well below are some of the highlights that Roy and his team have accomplished in his blink of an eye of time here in Capitol Area Council.

ROY WALLACE:
Worked at Sam Houston Area Council October 1, 1975 to July 1, 20012 (36 years, 9 months)
Worked Capitol Area Council January 23, 2012 to September 15, 2020 (7 years, 7 months, 23 days)
Scouting total 44 years, 4 months, 23 days but who’s counting
We have built 4 new wing showers and 1 new pool shower and dressing room.
We built campsite pavilions at Lost Pines and Tom Wooten 16, plus program pavilions at both camps 18.
We tore out the old ceiling system at the Lost Pines Dining Hall (YUCK!) replaced with foam insulation.
We put a new tin roof on the Lost Pines Dining Hall, and a new tin roof on the Administration Building.
We resurfaced all the roads at Lost Pines, Tom Wooten and Green Dickson.
We rebuilt countless miles of roads at Griffith League.
We worked on miles of water lines at Griffith League.
We built a new creek crossing at Griffith League.
We built a main parking area at Lost Pines and added a security gate.
Rebuilt two bridges to Tom Wooten.
We built a new staff area at Lost Pines, wired 12 cabins to power and built 12 sets of steps.
We worked on endless miles of water line, added storage buildings to all program areas,
Rebuilt the pavilion in Commissioners area.
Added a new AC/Heat unit to the Commissary. Added a dry goods room at Commissary.
We remodeled the wing shower at Smilin V Scout Ranch.
We added a 10x12 walk-in cooler at Smilin V.
New shotgun range, New 22 back stop.
Installed a new camp wide internet system with a tower.
Remodeled the ranger residence.
Removed the old unsafe campmaster building.
We spent countless hours fixing repairing and rebuilding almost everything at Lost Pines and Tom Wooten at least once.

Due to all of the COVID-19 stuff going on we won’t have a going away party, but I encourage you to contact Roy soon to give him heck one more time before he departs.

Roy – You will sincerely be missed!

From Roy:
Could not have done it without the help of the ranger staff, weekend rangers and countless volunteers.

To all those I’ve worked with and all those who have yet to come thank you for a time well spent at Capitol Area Council.

Roy
