Friends of Seguin Island Light Station

Friends of Seguin Island Light Station One of Maine's premier lighthouses is the second oldest in Maine and highest sitting 180 feet above sea level.

Seguin Island is 2.5 miles off the mouth of the Kennebec River, south of Georgetown Island, near Fort Popham & Popham Beach State Park. The Friends of Seguin Island Light Station, a not for profit organized in 1986 to maintain and preserve the Seguin Island Lighthouse and provide continuing public access to the island, is a member organization dedicated to keeping this part of Maine’s history, par

t of its future. The light has been in continuous operation for over 200 years. The Friends provide upkeep on all structures on the island, moorings for visitors, over 5 miles of trails on the island, historic markings and an on-island museum. For much of its history, Seguin has had resident lighthouse keepers and the Friends continue that tradition providing full time caretakers living in the keepers’ quarters on island from May to September each year. The organization also serves the mainland community educationally by regularly offering programs on the history of Seguin to area schools and groups.

SEGUIN IS OPEN!
Our Keepers Sarah and Savannah are on the island. Our opening team turned on the solar panel, installed new water lines from the well to a new storage tank and activated it. Museum and gift shop are open. Milli, our Gator made three trips from the beach to the top flawlessly with the water tank, gift shop inventory, and keepers’ supplies. A very exciting start to the 2026 season!

Our crew has been hard at work improving the trail to the top. Because cut brush was becoming an unsightly issue, FOSILS was able to procure a chipper for Milli to tow to our hot spots and we are now chipping our cuttings. We hope you will come out soon and see the great strides we are making at keeping your island beautifully preserved.

Great start on day 1! All equipment landed safely and the excavator cleared a trail from the sand beach, clearing the path of rocks up to the tramway. With the dock being delayed, this path will make putting ashore by our visitors much safer, especially at high tide. Stay tuned this week for more of our progress.

May 24 - Island Activity - If you're planning a pre-opening visit to the island this week, please be advised we are landing equipment and a small excavator on the island today. The excavator will be working on the recently discovered section of the ox-trail so please stick to the main path up the hill. While we have the machine on the island we are also looking to expand the camping area. Please be patient, we know our visitors come for serenity and peace. The last thing you want to hear is machinery churning. It is only expected to be for the week in preparation for our opening.

Happy May to all of our Seguin family. We are sooo close to opening the island with so much happening. Our newsletter will be out in a couple of weeks, our Keepers are very excited to get ashore, although our pier will not be ready until midsummer, our "Treasure Island" landing method is still here. We have multiple visits scheduled with the Marine Learning Project's schooner "Harvey Gamage" where we will be working with Maine's youth to broaden their knowledge and interest in maritime careers in Maine. We will be posting visitation dates soon so you can plan to visit while Gamage is out at our environmentally friendly "Bravo" mooring. If you would like to help be a part of this summer, please visit our website at seguinisland.org. You can participate in many ways; Purchase a raffle ticket to win a night on Seguin, Donate to our Keepers House Window capital campaign, or just make a general donation. All proceeds will go toward preserving this Maine treasure and continuing our goal of education of Maine's maritime heritage. See you on the island soon!

In 2024 Friends Of Seguin Island Light Station's reformed Board of Directors formulated a 3 year strategic plan for preservation and restoration of the Light Station. The culmination is the replacement of the Keeper's house windows in 2027. To date, FOSILS has achieved every objective in our plan and we are now in position to begin our windows replacement capital campaign. Because the light station is a National Historic Place, our replacement windows must comply with the 1857 era style per the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 but in such a way to survive Seguin's hostile environment. This puts our replacement and installation costs for 25 windows at $300,000. FOSILS has applied for an historic grant that will potentially provide for half the cost. This leaves FOSILS needing to raise at least $150,000. FOSILS will find out in October if we are awarded this grant. If we are not successful, our capital campaign goal will rise to the entire $300,000. Please help FOSILS achieve our 2027 objective of replacement windows for the Kepper's house. Our "Seguin Experience" raffle is still ongoing. FOSILS developed this idea as a means to fund our ongoing maintenance and preservation activities on the island. This raffle is our pilot and we are learning lessons on holding a raffle. We decided to pull a winner at 200 entries. We are currently 25% of the way to that goal. So, our first lesson is to advertise, advertise, advertise. Please feel free to share this post with your friends. You will be helping FOSILS ability to preserve your island. Enjoy the Spring weather, Summer and your visits to Seguin are just around the corner.
