Oh good. The bears are awake and immediately sticking their tongues out at us. That means it is officially time to get bear aware again.

Across the country, bears are emerging from their winter dens hungry, curious, and ready to start making up for several months of missed meals. This is the time of year when human bear encounters tend to increase, and many of those situations can be avoidable.

Here is how to not accidentally become part of a bear’s daily schedule:

• Give bears space. A lot of space. Think football field, not selfie distance.
• Don't leave food where a bear can find it.
• Secure your garbage, food, grills, and anything that smells good... or not so good.
• Make noise when hiking so you do not surprise a bear. Nobody enjoys a surprise bear meeting.
• Carry bear spray and know how to use it before you need it.

Most conflicts between people and bears come down to food. If bears learn to associate humans with an easy meal, it almost always ends badly for the bear.
