In northern Idaho, Lake Pend Oreille drops well over 1,100 feet in places, making it one of the deepest lakes in the country. It is not just huge and glacially carved. It is also quiet enough, deep enough, and stable enough that the U.S. Navy has used it for decades as the home of its Acoustic Research Detachment in Bayview, where large-scale submarine and ship models are tested.
That real history is what gives the lake such an eerie reputation.
