🌟 CAMP WANAKE BEGAN WITH A VISION… 🌟
Long before Camp Wanake became the 250-acre place we know and love today, there was a dream.
In 1943, members of the Brethren Church purchased the Virgil Camp farm and apple orchard between Beach City and Brewster for $8,500. The property included 80 acres, a farmhouse, barn, shed, and a small swimming pool. The first summer program was held in 1945, and Wanake officially celebrated its grand opening in 1946.
But where did the name Wanake come from? 🏕️
A contest was held to name the new camp, and Jeanie Jacobs of nearby Navarre won $20 for suggesting WA-NA-KE—inspired by the first syllables of three Native American words meaning “a beautiful, spiritual place among the hills.” 🌲
Under Rev. Mel Moody, Wanake became a pioneer in small-group decentralized camping, placing campers in “family groups” with adult counselors to learn about God, one another, and creation.
And the impact has continued far beyond the campgrounds. Generations of campers and counselors have discovered their call to serve God as camping professionals, teachers, pastors, and leaders.
From 80 acres in 1943 to 250 acres today, the vision has grown—but the heart of Camp Wanake remains the same: a place where people encounter God, build community, and discover they are loved. ❤️
As we celebrate 80 years of Camp Wanake, we’re grateful for everyone who dreamed, served, prayed, gave, and helped make this place what it is today.
