Meet our very first guest—a curious juvenile black bear caught on one of our trail cams, making himself right at home.

We built Base Camp to be a place where people can reconnect with the wild—and where the wild still feels welcome too. Moments like this remind us we’re not alone out here.

Every decision we make—every tent we furnish, every trail we clear—is intentional. Low impact. Respectful of the land. In tune with the wild things that have called this place home long before we arrived.

Because this land doesn’t just belong to us. We’re guests here too.

I’m in absolute shock. Heartbroken. We just lost everything we own at Base Camp. Years of hard work and tens of thousands of dollars. This is our 20’ tall tent almost completely under water. What you can’t see is our ford ranger farm truck, the zero turn, the shed with every tool, generator, and piece of equipment we own. There used to be an outdoor wrap around sectional by this tent and an outdoor kitchen. We bought a 3k tent for our first campsite that we planned to put up when we opened this spring and now it’s gone too. The icing on the cake is that our insurance doesn’t cover flooding…I’m grateful that we are okay, and we still have a home. I know it could be worse, and I’m know a lot of our neighbors are hurting way worse than we are, but i just don’t know how to process our dream literally washing down the river and being completely powerless to do anything about it.

Wed morning update: We would like to thank the public for sharing out our missing persons report. As a result of those efforts, we received a lead that Scott was looking for directions on how to locate Sal Branch Waterfalls within the Wilderness area of DBNF. We sent a group of 11 searchers into the area last night and searched until after midnight but we were unable to locate him. This is a very rugged off trail area to search and visibility was compromised by darkness and fog. We ask the public to please stay clear of the area between Gladie Center and Osborne Bend Parking areas today. Parking is limited and search teams will need to utilize what little parking there is along the roadways. Also, please use caution if driving through the area as there will be a heavy SAR presence in this general area.

Wolfe County Search & Rescue is actively searching for Scott Allen Hern. His vehicle was last seen at the Tower Rock Parking area along Hwy 715 in the Red River Gorge. We have a report of him being seen on July 13th but this isn't 100% confirmed. He was last seen by his family in Ironton Ohio on July 4th. If you have seen Scott, please contact the Wolfe County dispatch at 606-668-6757. We plan to have dog teams in the area on the morning of July 17th weather permitting.
