A recent guest, visiting for a girls' weekend, stayed in the Newcastle House and couldn't say enough about the experience. Innkeepers Robin and Emma went out of their way with local recommendations, there were homemade desserts each evening, and a gathering space that felt "more like a home than a hotel." She loved the screened porches overlooking the main house and gardens, with wind chimes ringing softly in the evening breeze. The made-to-order breakfast was a highlight too, from fresh biscuits to some of the best grits she'd ever had.

Her only regret? The stay wasn't long enough. She's already planning to return, husbands in tow next time.

Just a short drive from the inn, one of the Lowcountry's best free wildlife shows is happening right now.

Port Royal's Cypress Wetlands is home to a rookery, a communal nesting ground where great and snowy egrets gather alongside little blue, green, and black-crowned night herons. It's part of the Beaufort Barrier Islands, a Globally Important Bird Area recognized by Audubon, with over 180 species passing through.

It's a quiet, easy stop to add to your Beaufort day. Bring your camera (and maybe binoculars) and see how many species you can spot.

We still can't get over how beautiful our new columns are on the inn.

This Greek Revival home was built circa 1820 by Thomas Smith Rhett, with a two-story wraparound piazza supported by stately columns, a timeless architectural feature that helped the home catch the Lowcountry breeze long before air conditioning existed. The house has worn many hats since then, even serving as a hospital recovery building during the Civil War, but it's been a warm, welcoming inn for guests for nearly four decades.

After months of careful restoration, our guests now get to enjoy the new columns. Preserving the architectural integrity of this nearly 200-year-old home has been at the heart of the project from day one. Guests can once again enjoy breakfast on the veranda, and those staying in our upper-level rooms have access to their private veranda spaces once again.

Here's to many more memories in this historic home away from home.

This annual Gullah heritage festival at the Penn Center on St. Helena Island features Gullah arts, crafts, food, music, history, demonstrations, and a parade. This is a great event if you’re interested in Lowcountry culture and history.
