The dream began in 1982 when Rep. Ethridge met with Roy Stevens of Morehead City, then executive director of Carteret Economic Development Council, to discuss the feasibility of such a project.
The three-story facility would offer patrons rooms on the second and third floors with private balconies overlooking the Gallant’s Channel. Five rooms including two handicaps accessible, will be located on the first floor and feature private patios. Reception and lounge will be on the first floor.
Beaufort Inn opened for business April 1987.
A grand opening ceremony was held April 11,1987. A six-gun salute by the militia, which was arranged as a surprise for the Ethridge’s by Kathryn Cloud and Judy Spitsbergen of the Beaufort Historical Association, according to Mrs. Ethridge.
