The loudest animals on Earth are becoming quieter, and scientists say the silence is revealing what the ocean can no longer provide.

Researchers found blue whale song detections fell by nearly 40% after an intense Pacific marine heatwave disrupted the food web.

Humpback whales, which eat a wider variety of prey, continued singing more consistently, highlighting how specialized blue whales are.
