The best part of dinner might be everything that happens before it.

The last few things finding their way to the table. Someone getting the fire going.

A little music in the background. People wandering over to see what’s cooking.

Nothing particularly rehearsed. Nothing in a hurry.

Just the familiar feeling that something good is about to happen.

And that everyone is going to want to stick around for a while.

Turns out, dirt has a pretty impressive social life.

Beneath our feet, an entire community of fungi, bacteria, and microorganisms is busy exchanging nutrients, breaking things down, and generally keeping the whole operation running.

Meanwhile, we’re up here taking all the credit for growing a tomato.

At Homage, we’re learning that growing good food has a lot to do with caring for the things we can’t see.

The soil. The organisms living within it. The relationships that make everything above ground possible.

Because the story of what’s on your plate starts long before anyone turns on the stove.

And apparently, the dirt has been doing most of the networking.

A little smoke. A lot of curiosity. And some very small beekeepers.

There’s something wonderful about introducing children to a world that’s been quietly working around them all along.

The bees don’t know they’re giving a lesson in ecology. They’re just going about their business. Pollinating flowers, tending the hive, making honey, and doing the remarkably complicated work of being bees.

Meanwhile, we’re putting on protective suits and trying to understand how any of it works.

At Homage, we want more moments like this.

The kind where learning happens because someone gets curious enough to look a little closer.

And where the smallest creatures have some of the biggest things to teach us.

Somewhere between setting up the kitchen and getting everyone fed, the good stuff happens.

A little chaos. A lot of prep. Someone asking when we’re eating.

We love the part of cooking that happens before anyone sits down. The chopping, arranging, tasting, adjusting. The conversations that happen while someone is looking for a knife or trying to find a place to put everything.

At Homage, food is going to be a big part of the story.

But so are the people making it.

And honestly, we’re pretty excited about both.

The more we build Homage, the more interested we become in the space around the meal.

Where the food came from.

How it was grown.

Who prepared it.

Who you’re sitting beside.

Whether anyone is in a hurry to leave.

Because feeding someone is relatively simple.

Creating the conditions for them to actually arrive is something else.

That’s the table we’re building toward.

The menu starts long before the kitchen.

Before the harvest, before the first tomato is sliced or the first handful of greens makes it onto a plate, someone has to choose what gets planted.

And here, Montana gets a say.

We’re choosing varieties for the place they’ll actually grow—cold-hardy, resilient, flavorful, and capable of thriving in this particular climate.

Because we’re not interested in asking the land to become something it isn’t.

We want to find out what it does beautifully.

The seasons decide the menu before we do.

Maybe Homage started here.

Not with plans or buildings or a name for what it would become.

But with evenings by the river that nobody was ready to end.

Kids disappearing into the trees. Dinner around a fire. Dogs underfoot. Wet clothes. Bare feet. One more log because the sun went down and no one felt like going home yet.

When we talk about what we’re building at Homage, it can sound like a lot of big ideas.

But really, we want to make more room for this.

We’ve figured out how to make eating incredibly convenient.

But convenience and nourishment aren’t always the same thing.

A meal can fill a stomach in ten minutes. The meals we remember tend to do something else entirely.

They make us sit down. Pass something across the table. Stay for another conversation. Notice what we’re eating, where it came from, and who is there with us.

Maybe the question isn’t only what are we eating?

Maybe it’s how are we eating it?

There’s a kind of tiredness that sleep doesn’t fix.

The kind that comes from always moving, always answering, always being somewhere else before you’ve quite left where you are.

We think hospitality can offer something different.

Not an escape from your life.

A little space to return to it.

To eat without rushing. Sit without needing to accomplish something. Notice the people across the table. Remember what it feels like to be fully where you are.

Maybe luxury isn’t always about having more.

Maybe sometimes, it’s the relief of needing less.

Before Homage had a roof, it had a blessing.

At the highest point of the timber frame sits a small evergreen bough — part of an old timber-framing tradition known as the wetting bush.

A thank you to the forest for the timber it provided. A marker of a frame raised safely. And, over time, a wish for growth, good fortune, and a long life for the structure and the people who will gather beneath it.

There are so many decisions that go into building a place from the ground up.

We love that one of them is simply remembering to say thank you.
