Henry Richardi built the Grand Victorian in 1895 in the Queen Anne style, and the front of the house still tells the whole story.
Start at the top of the turret, where the steep shingles rise to a point above its own little balcony. Then drop down to the wide bay window on the first floor, where morning light fills the room behind it.

Some of the best spots up north are the quiet ones most people drive right past.

Antrim Creek Natural Area is a short drive from the inn. Clear water runs over stone through the woods on its way to Grand Traverse Bay, and on a cool fall morning you can have the trail almost to yourself.

Pack a thermos, take the long way back through the color, and settle onto the porch when you get home.

Old houses ask a lot of the people who love them.

This year the Grand Victorian got a brand-new roof. The new shingles sit over the same gables and gingerbread trim Henry Richardi built in 1895.

Leann and Jake bought this house almost five years ago to bring it back to what he built and share it with people who appreciate it. Every repair and replanted flower bed is part of that promise.

Henry Richardi built the Grand Victorian in 1895, and he clearly had an eye for detail.

Look up at the side of the house and you'll find a second-story porch tucked under its own arched roofline, with gables above it. This week the old maple out front turned bright gold right behind it all.

The Balcony Room opens onto a private balcony above Richardi Park. Inside, a hand-carved headboard rises nearly to the wallpaper border, with a marble-topped washstand beside it. Step out with your morning coffee and watch the trees across the park change color.
