What is the Race to Alaska (R2AK) you ask? Well, it’s a grueling, no-engine, no-support 750-mile human-powered boat race from Port Townsend, WA, to Ketchikan, AK.

Who is brave (and wild) enough to enter this race you ask? One of the key members in our maintenance department, Doug Shoup, is! Doug is finishing the final prep for his Sailing Angus RowCruiser for the 2026 Race to Alaska (R2AK) where he’ll race as ‘Team Perseverance’.

Starting June 14th Doug & the R2AK racers will compete in the first leg “The Proving Ground” in Port Townsend, races will race to Victoria. B.C. within 36 hours to move to the next leg of the competition. On paper you may think, no big deal. But factor in the winds and currents and the strategy to get to Victoria gets real.

And unlike most races, there are no engines, no support crews, and no shortcuts. Racers rely only on wind and human power while navigating challenging tides, currents, weather, and waterways. Every mile is earned through strategy, endurance, and perseverance.

Once the racers pass the Proving Ground, the second leg kicks off on June 17th for the 700-mile adventure to Ketchikan! To qualify, they must complete the race in 22 days and there are only two checkpoints along the way: Seymour Narrows and Bella Bella.

This is the biggest R2AK race to date with 70 teams on the starting line in Port Townsend. You can meet Doug, Team Perseverance R2AK in Port Townsend on June 13th!
