I ❤️ Mackinac — and the officers who protect it!

Policing Mackinac Island is unlike policing just about anywhere else in Michigan. During the busy summer season, officers patrol primarily on foot and bicycle, while Michigan State Police troopers assigned to the island can even be seen patrolling by horse and carriage. When winter arrives, the bicycles can give way to snowmobiles.

And although Mackinac Island is famous for being car-free, emergency vehicles—including a police vehicle—are permitted when they’re needed.

Perhaps the best example of what the FOP is all about is the island’s emphasis on community policing. During the winter, the police department even assists senior residents with transportation to church, the medical center, airport and downtown.

Whether it’s a patrol car, bicycle, snowmobile, or even a horse-drawn carriage, the mission remains the same: protecting and serving the community.

The Michigan FOP is proud to represent and support the men and women of law enforcement across our state—from Detroit to Mackinac Island and everywhere in between.

💙 I ❤️ Mackinac. I ❤️ Michigan Law Enforcement.

MSP lost one of their own today. These days are never easy and it is a reminder that we never truly know when some is struggling or what battles they may be facing mentally and or physically.

Rest easy brother, we have the watch from here.

Ten years have passed since Court Security Supervisor Joseph Zangaro and Court Officer Ronald Kienzle made the ultimate sacrifice in service to Berrien County.
Time may soften the pain, but it does not diminish their courage, their dedication, or the profound loss felt by their families, friends, and the law enforcement community. They came to work on July 11, 2016, committed to protecting others, and gave their lives in the line of duty.
Today, we pause to remember not only how they died, but how they lived—with honor, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to public service. Their names are forever etched into the history of Berrien County and into the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing them and serving beside them.
As we mark this solemn 10th anniversary, may we never forget their sacrifice. We honor their legacy by remembering them, supporting those they left behind, and continuing to serve with the same courage and dedication they exemplified every day.
Gone, but never forgotten. End of Watch: July 11, 2016.
