If you have a camper who missed out on registering for Day Camp before it filled up way back in January, we have good news for you! We have TWELVE open spots in Day Camp due to some unexpected cancellations in the last few days. Tell a friend who might want a Day Camp spot! This is a great time to do it, since there are also just a few days left before the Refer-a-Friend program deadline (a new camper can note who referred them (not a sibling) when they register, and as long as both campers are signed up for any week of camp, they can each get $25 for the camp store).

The new Day Camp availability is as follows: ages 7-8: eight spots open**, mostly girls; ages 9-12: four spots open**, boys only.
**Since our current openings are somewhat specific, all new registrations will start on a waitlist until we can review and make sure we have a spot for the camper. Spots will be assigned in the order that the campers are added to the waitlist.

We had a truly beautiful day last Saturday for the Celebration gathering. The rainy, chilly weather we're currently experiencing makes us even more grateful for the sunshine and warm weather we enjoyed last weekend!

We also enjoyed the excellent meal served by our staff, board, and volunteers, and a great concert by The Walking Roots Band. It was fun to have the stage fill with children to help sing some songs! The kids also enjoyed racing plastic ducks in the stream and jumping into the pool for the first swim of the season, as well as games, tours, and treats at the summer camp open house. We're grateful for everyone who attended -- you all helped make it a wonderful event!

It's almost Celebration time! We hope you can join us on Saturday for this special event!

Part of the fun planned for the day is a Summer Camp Open House from 1:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon. All are welcome, but anyone new to Highland Summer Camps is particularly invited to stop by! It's an ideal time to get to know some of our staff and familiarize yourself with the Summer Camp area. See the images here for some more details, or pop over to our website to learn more and let us know you're coming!

Time for a photo round-up of the last couple weeks!

First, a big thank you to the volunteers who were here last Saturday for the work day. Pictured are some of the crew: working on landscaping outside Green Valley House, installing railings on the youth office footbridge, and replacing rotting wood around the planter our main entrance sign planter. You did great work, volunteers!

Next are a couple pictures of the cabins under construction at Massanutten Technical Center. They look more and more like real cabins at every stage now! The exterior siding is up, the mini splits are installed, and the interior paneling is going on.

Then a few pictures near Mountain View Retreat Center. Several trees were planted there in memory of Everett and Evelyn Suter, and new siding is now almost completely installed. You may recall that the front of the building got new siding last year; this is now the back of the building being finished up.

Finally, our pool is sparkling clean and looking inviting! We had new pumps and filters installed and a leaky seam repaired during the off season, and one of our lifeguards has been working hard over the last weeks to get everything ready for swimming season. Anyone who is up for spring swimming will get a chance next Saturday during our Celebration event! The forecast is saying it will be sunny and in the upper 70s, so we're planning to have the pool open for a few hours next Saturday afternoon. Will we see you there?

April has been a great month for volunteers! And we hope to kick off May with another great work day, this Saturday, May 2. If you can help us out for the morning and/or afternoon on Saturday, we'll feed you lunch and share all our gratitude! Please let us know you're coming (link below) so we can plan projects and food accordingly.

Projects this Saturday will primarily be the railing for the youth office footbridge, plus landscaping and flowerbeds.

Pictured are some of this month's volunteers! The first 4 pictures feature volunteers from JMU Intervarsity working on the youth office bridge and planting shrubs outside Green Valley House. The next 4 pictures show staff from VMMissions, who spent a day prepping flowerbeds outside Mountain View Retreat Center, assembling bunk beds in Green Valley House, and starting a leveled gravel pad for a fire ring and picnic tables outside the Retreat Center. (The JMU crew finished that project, as shown in picture 9.) The last picture shows the group that worked their way up to Tiger Rocks, cleaning up the trail from winter deadfalls and making sure it was ready for hikers. We also had a whole crew of mowers here last week who picked up loads of sticks and got us ready for the mowing season, but we didn't get any pictures of them.

We are so appreciative of each person who has given their time and energy to help us work through our extra-long project list! THANK YOU!

Just a couple hours left in the Great Community Give, and we haven't reached our fundraising goal yet. As of 4:30, we've raised 86% of our $45K goal. Pop over to our GCG page to learn more about the cabin project or make a gift before 8pm today (April 22)!

Also, Kent and Lee are heading to The Community Foundation to tell the story of the cabin partnership in a radio interview at 5:15pm, if you happen to be listening!
