Berkeley Springs has been a resort community since the 1750's. It was founded in 1776 and heralded as America's First Spa in 1881. It was a favorite vacation spot for George Washington. He made his first visit to our charming town in 1748 when he was a 16 year old land surveyor. He frequented the warm springs and surrounding area through the 1770's and even owned land here.
Berkeley Springs is known for its healing waters. Local legend states that Native American tribes made a peace agreement stating that all tribes could bring their loved ones to be healed without interference.
There is plenty of civil war history around Berkeley Springs, but no record of any skirmishes near our beloved springs.
